Early life and background

Sumit Antil was born on 6 July 1998 in Khewra (sometimes spelled Khewda), Sonipat, in the state of Haryana. He grew up in a middle-class family and is one of four children; his mother is Nirmala Devi and his father Ram Kumar Antil served in the Indian Air Force. Sumit has three sisters: Kiran Antil, Sushila Antil and Renu Antil. He completed a B.Com from Ramjas College at the University of Delhi. He is listed as unmarried.

In his youth Sumit wanted to pursue wrestling and admired wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt. In 2015 he suffered a serious road accident that resulted in amputation of his leg. He initially received treatment at a military hospital and then spent time at the Artificial Limb Centre in Pune. After his recovery he was introduced to para athletics by a fellow para-athlete from his village and shifted his focus to javelin throw.

Career

Sumit trained under coach Naval Singh in Delhi. Early in his para-athletics career he faced practical challenges with prosthetics during training but persisted and began competing internationally in 2019. That year he won multiple silver medals, including at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, the Paris Open Handisport and a World Para Athletics Grand Prix event in Italy. At the Dubai championships he recorded a mark of 62.88 m.

His performances earned him inclusion in the GoSports Foundation’s Para Champions Programme in 2019. Sumit qualified for the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, held in 2021. At those Games he produced a standout series of throws in the men’s javelin F64 competition, repeatedly surpassing his own marks and setting a new world and Paralympic record with a best distance of 68.55 m in the final.

Sumit continued to improve in subsequent seasons. In July 2023 he won gold at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, recording a world-record throw of 70.83 m. A few months later at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou he extended that mark with a throw of 73.29 m to take gold in the men’s T64 javelin. In 2024 he created a new Paralympic record in the F64 category with a second-attempt throw of 70.59 m and was one of India’s flag bearers, alongside Bhagyashree Jadhav, at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Outside competitions, Sumit has also competed in able-bodied events, including the Indian Grand Prix series in Patiala, where he finished seventh with a best of 66.43 m competing against elite Indian athletes.

Sumit’s Paralympic gold and record-breaking series in Tokyo brought widespread recognition across India. His achievements were celebrated by fellow athletes and public figures, and the Haryana state government announced a cash reward and a government job offer in recognition of his Paralympic success.
