Early life and background

Sumit Kumar Ganguly was born on 15 April 1982 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in the city his family has long been associated with and completed a Bachelor of Commerce at The Mithibai College of Arts in Mumbai. The youngest child of Kishore Kumar and Leena Chandavarkar, Sumit lost his father when he was five and spent much of his youth under his mother’s care and the guidance of his elder step-brother, Amit Kumar.

From an early age he was exposed to music and performance. He often accompanied his father and brother on musical outings and later learned to play the casio. As a child he performed alongside Amit Kumar; at age nine the two sang the song “Hum Hain Do Kishore.” Those formative experiences shaped his path into singing.

Career

Sumit made his playback singing debut in 2002 when producer Raju Mawani offered him an opportunity after seeing him perform his father’s songs on stage. His first film assignment was Mudda – The Issue, for which he recorded two tracks, including “Deewangee” and “Kaise Main Kahoon.”

He continued to work in films, contributing the song “Bandhane Lagi” to the soundtrack of the 2004 film Naach. Over the years Sumit has performed live with his brother Amit; in 2011 the two organized a tribute concert titled Do Kishore, an audio-visual celebration of their father’s music and the siblings’ own work.

In 2015 an album titled Haan, Main Badnaam Hoon was released under the family project Kumar Brothers Music; the eight-track record was recorded at the family bungalow Gauri Kunj and featured Amit Kumar’s vocals with lyrics by Leena Chandavarkar. Sumit and Amit formally launched Kumar Brothers Music in 2020 to create an online store for their recordings and to curate material related to their father, including unreleased tracks. Through this venture Sumit has also supported interest in Bhadra Sangeet, a lesser-known form of Indian classical music.
