Early life and background

Sumit Nagal was born on 16 August 1997 in Jhajjar, Haryana. He grew up in a family where his father, Suresh Nagal, worked as a teacher and his mother, Krishna Nagal, was a homemaker. Sumit has an elder sister, Sakshi Shokeen. He attended Little Angels Senior Secondary School in Jhajjar and later Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya in Paschim Vihar, New Delhi. He completed education up to the intermediate level and did not attend college.

Sumit first picked up sport through cricket as a child, but his father encouraged him to pursue tennis. The family moved to Delhi when he was seven so he could train at the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Tennis Academy. He won his first tournament at age eight and continued to progress through junior ranks.

Career

Sumit turned professional in 2015 after developing through junior programs and international training stints. Early in his development he was identified by Mahesh Bhupathi’s talent hunt and selected for the Mission 2018 initiative; Bhupathi provided coaching and later continued to support and mentor Sumit even after the programme ended. Coach Bobby Mahal invited Sumit to train in Canada, a move that was financially supported by Bhupathi. In 2014 Sumit moved to Germany after being accepted into the Schuettler Waske Tennis University.

As a junior, Sumit captured a notable title at Wimbledon in 2015 when he won the Boys’ Doubles championship alongside Lý Hoàng Nam. He made his Davis Cup debut for India in 2016.

On the professional circuit Sumit has won two ATP Challenger titles and nine ITF titles. His highest singles ranking to date is world No. 129, achieved on 7 October 2019. He qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw at the US Open in 2019 and faced Roger Federer in that tournament; he took a set off Federer, becoming the first Indian to win a set against Federer in Grand Slam play. In 2020 he reached the second round of the US Open by defeating Bradley Klahn, marking the first time an Indian man had reached the second round at the US Open in seven years.

Sumit has worked with several coaches across his career. His early coach was Bobby Mahal (2008–2014), followed by Sascha Nensel (2014–2016), and Mariano Delfino has been listed as his coach from 2016 onwards. Mahesh Bhupathi serves as his mentor and manager, advising on tournament selection and career planning.
