Early life and background

Sumrit Shahi was born on 12 February 1993 in Chandigarh and grew up there. He completed parts of his schooling at St. John's High School in Chandigarh and later attended SelaQui International School in Dehradun before finishing his school education at Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula. He studied at Symbiosis International University in Pune, where he earned a degree in Liberal Arts with majors in Media Studies, Film Appreciation, and Business Management.

Shahi comes from a family that includes his mother, Smiley Shahi, and two sisters, Jasween Pathania and Twinkle Shahi. His father, Sukhjoit Shahi, passed away in 2016. He practices Sikhism and lists reading and travelling among his interests.

Shahi published his first novel, Just Friends, in 2010 at the age of 17. The book sold strongly in its initial months and established him as a young voice in contemporary romance. In the mid-2010s Shahi expanded into journalism and screenwriting. He wrote features for The Daily Post, Chandigarh, and freelanced for India Today as a business profile writer. He made his television screenwriting debut in 2012 on the StarPlus series Ek Veer Ki Ardaas…Veera, a show he co-wrote with Durjoy Datta. Over the following years he contributed to many television projects and is credited with more than 1,300 episodes across ten shows, including Sadda Haq – My Life, My Choice (2013–2016), Million Dollar Girl – From Banaras to Paris (2014–2015), and Boyz (2015).

In May 2015 Shahi published Never Kiss Your Best Friend. That title was later adapted into a web series in 2020, with Shahi working on the screenplay for the adaptation. He has also written for a number of web series and digital projects, including Black Coffee (2017), Duck Sey Dude (2018), Medically Yours (2019), and Dev DD (2021).
