Sumukhi Suresh Biography

Sumukhi Suresh is an Indian actor, stand-up comedian, writer and director who rose to prominence through YouTube sketches and web series. Born in Nagpur, S

Early life and background

Sumukhi Suresh was born on 18 October 1987 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. She grew up in India and later moved for work and education; her hometown is listed as Chennai and she attended M. O. P. Vaishnav College for Women in Chennai. She completed a graduation in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Science Management.

Career

Sumukhi's career in performance and comedy developed steadily after she relocated from Nagpur. In 2009 she moved to Bengaluru and initially worked in non-entertainment roles, including as a librarian at a children’s library called Hippocampus and later in a food laboratory. She then joined TUV Rheinland India Pvt Limited in Bengaluru in 2011 as a business development manager.

Her entry into comedy and performance accelerated after she began performing with an improvisational group called The Improv in Bengaluru in 2013. With that group she took part in more than 100 shows and honed her improvisational skills. On YouTube she first gained attention as an actor in the 2014 sketch Anu Aunty–Engineering Anthem, and a later sketch — in which she played Parvati Bai alongside Sanjay Manaktala in 2015 — helped build her online presence.

A breakthrough came with the YouTube series Better Life Foundation (2016), where her portrayal of the character Sumukhi Chawla became widely recognized. That year she also became known for a recurring comedic persona, a 10-year-old girl referred to as Behti Naak, which further expanded her popularity.

Sumukhi transitioned into web and film roles as her profile grew. She appeared in the Kannada film Humble Politician Nograj (2018) as Lavanya. On the Hindi web scene she has acted in a number of series, including Pushpavalli (2017), Comicstaan (2018), Go Straight Take Left (2018), Don’t Tell Amma (2019), and Pushpavalli 2 (2020). Across these projects she has worked both on-screen and behind the scenes as a writer and director, alongside her continuing work as a stand-up performer.

Public profile

Known to friends and fans as Sumu, Sumukhi has been open about the practical challenges of building a comedy career in India. In interviews she has discussed the need to produce consistent material, write regularly, and draw audiences for live shows. She has also spoken about how recognition can be framed by gender, explaining that she focused on becoming a standout comic rather than being defined by being a woman in the field.

She counts veteran Tamil actress Manorama among her favourite comedians, and her creative collaborations have included work with fellow comedians such as Naveen Richard.

Personal life

Sumukhi is unmarried and has two older brothers. She follows Hinduism and is identified as belonging to the Tamil Brahmin community. Physically, records list her height at approximately 158 cm (about 5 feet 2 inches) with black hair and black eyes. She has a tattoo on her left arm with a phrase that is said to mean "your mom" in Mandarin.

Latest updates

Her body of work spans YouTube sketches, live improv shows, stand-up performances and roles in web series and film. Notable recent screen credits in the licensed information include the Kannada film Humble Politician Nograj (2018) and multiple Hindi web series through 2020 such as Pushpavalli 2. She continues to be active across formats as a performer, writer and director.
