Sundar Pichai (full name Pichai Sundararajan) was born on 10 June 1972 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in Chennai. He attended Jawahar Vidyalaya in Ashok Nagar and Vana Vani School at IIT Madras during his school years. His father worked as an electrical engineer and his mother as a stenographer. Pichai remained in the family home in Chennai until about age 20.

He pursued engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, graduating with a B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering in 1993. A scholarship enabled him to continue his studies in the United States, where he earned an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He later completed an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was recognized as a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.

Career

Pichai began his professional life outside of Google, working as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company before joining Google in April 2004—the same day Gmail was launched. Over the years he rose through leadership roles at Google, becoming closely associated with major product initiatives including the company’s web browser effort.

He took on responsibility for Android and other key products, and is credited with influencing how the Android team operated within Google. In November 2015 he became CEO of Google. In December 2019 he was named CEO of Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, while continuing to lead Google itself.
