Sundar Singh Gurjar Biography
Sundar Singh Gurjar is an Indian Paralympic javelin thrower from Hindaun Village, Karauli district, Rajasthan. Competing in F46/T46 events, he has won gold
Early life and backgroundSundar Singh Gurjar was born on 1 January 1996 in Hindaun Village in the Karauli district of Rajasthan. Raised in a family where his father and elder brother were involved in wrestling, Sundar showed an early preference for sport over academics and sought out athletics opportunities during his school years. He is from a modest background; his mother is named Kalia Devi. Sundar stands about 183 cm (6 feet) tall and has brown eyes and natural black hair.
Career
Sundar began athletics in 2012 and initially competed in general-category events at the junior level. In 2015, a workplace accident resulted in the permanent loss of his left hand. Following recovery he trained at a centre in Hanumangarh and was introduced to para-sport coaching under RD Singh. He shifted focus to Para athletics and competes in the F46 classification, for athletes with an upper-limb deficiency.
He first made international waves at the Fazza IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai in 2016, recording a javelin throw of 59.36m. That season he set a noteworthy mark of 68.42m at a national championship in Panchkula in March 2016, although that throw was not ratified by the international governing body because the event lacked recognition. Later in 2016 he narrowly missed competing at the Rio Paralympics due to a registration mishap that resulted in disqualification; the episode triggered a difficult period but ultimately led him back to focused training.
Sundar returned to form with strong performances in 2017, including a 60.33m javelin at the Fazza Grand Prix and multiple golds across javelin, discus and shot put. His breakthrough came at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, where he won gold in the men’s F46 javelin with a personal-best of 60.36m at the time, becoming the second Indian to win gold at that championships.
At the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta he earned silver in javelin with a 61.33m throw and added a bronze in discus. Despite a shoulder injury that limited training at times, he defended his World Para Athletics Championships javelin title in 2019 with a season-best 61.22m, securing another world gold and a quota place for the Tokyo Paralympics.
The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted regular training, but Sundar secured access to facilities in Jaipur with the help of state sports officials and used the downtime to rebuild his form. At the Tokyo Paralympics (held in 2021), he captured the bronze medal in the javelin throw with a 64.01m effort, contributing to India’s strongest-ever Paralympic haul.
He continued competing at the highest level and won a bronze medal in the men’s javelin T-46 event at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, recording a 64.96m throw in the final.
Public profile
Sundar has been coached by Mahavir Prasad Saini and mentored earlier at the Hanumangarh training centre by RD Singh. His career milestones include national and international medals across javelin, discus and shot put, multiple world championship podiums and Paralympic medals. He has received recognition in India for his achievements, including the Arjuna Award from the Government of India in 2019 and other national sporting honours earlier in his career.
Outside the field, Sundar is employed as an Assistant Conservator in the forest department. He maintains a public image as a determined athlete who overcame a life-changing injury to reach the podium on the world stage.
Latest updates
Sundar came into the Tokyo Paralympics as one of India’s medal prospects and delivered a bronze medal performance in javelin. He went on to add another Paralympic bronze in Paris 2024, throwing 64.96m in the T-46 final. These results reinforce his status as a consistent medal contender in F46/T46 javelin events and a leading figure in Indian para-athletics.
