Early life and backgroundSunil Kumar Jakhar was born on 9 February 1954 in Panjkosi, Punjab, and is rooted in a Hindu Jat family. He grew up in the Abohar area of Punjab and completed a Bachelor of Arts at a government college in Chandigarh in 1974 before earning an MBA from Kurukshetra University, Haryana. Politics runs in his family: his father, Balram Jakhar, served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha and later as Governor of Madhya Pradesh, while his elder brothers have also been active in public life.
Career
Jakhar began his formal electoral career in the mid-1990s. He contested the 1996 Lok Sabha election from the Ferozepur constituency as a member of the Indian National Congress but did not win. He later secured election to the Punjab Legislative Assembly from the Abohar constituency in 2002 and retained the seat in 2007 and 2012, serving three consecutive terms as MLA.
During his time in the state assembly Jakhar rose to prominence within the Congress party. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2012 to 2017 and served as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee from 2017 until 2021. He also contested national elections: he stood in the 2014 general election from Ferozepur, and in a 2017 bypoll he won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat, securing a notably large margin that broke an earlier record for the constituency.
Jakhar faced electoral defeats as well. He lost the 2014 Lok Sabha contest in Ferozepur and the 2017 Punjab assembly election in Abohar to a BJP candidate. In May 2022 he resigned from the Indian National Congress and, five days later, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP named him to its national executive in December 2022 and appointed him as the party’s Punjab president in July 2023.
Alongside his electoral roles, Jakhar has participated in parliamentary work, including membership of the Standing Committee on Science & Technology, Environment & Forests during his time in the Lok Sabha.
