Early life and background

Sunil Kumar was born on 29 September 1999 in Dabarpur village, Sonipat district, Haryana. Raised in a rural family, he grew up in Sonipat and spent his early years training at the Sports Academy of Nidani in Jind. Sunil’s father, Ashwini Kumar, inspired the family to pursue wrestling and passed that aspiration on to his children. After Ashwini Kumar died in a 2010 road accident, Sunil’s mother Anita Devi took on responsibility for the household while the family made difficult financial sacrifices to support his athletic development.

Sunil is the youngest of several siblings. He has two elder brothers, Monu Kumar and Sumit Kumar, and an elder sister, Renu. Despite limited resources, his family prioritized Sunil’s training; his brother Sumit later described how the household managed school fees, board and diet costs and even leased farmland and took loans to cover expenses. Sunil initially competed in freestyle wrestling but switched to the Greco-Roman style in 2015.

Career

Sunil Kumar has represented India in Greco-Roman wrestling across junior and senior continental events. He made his international debut at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship in 2016. He collected bronze medals at the Asian Junior Championships in both 2017 and 2018, before stepping up to Under-23 and senior-level competition.

In 2018 and 2019 Sunil won gold medals at the Asian Under-23 Championships. He also reached the final of the senior Asian Wrestling Championship in 2019, finishing with a silver medal after a loss in the final. The following year he recorded a significant career milestone by winning the gold medal in the men’s 87 kg Greco-Roman event at the 2020 Asian Wrestling Championship — the first Indian gold in that category at the continental event in 27 years.

Sunil continued to compete on the international circuit, taking silver at the UWW Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series in 2020. In October 2023 he earned a bronze medal in the men’s Greco-Roman 87 kg bracket at the 19th Asian Games, beating Kazakhstan’s Atabek Azisbekov 2–1 in the medal bout.

Alongside his sporting career, Sunil served briefly in the Indian Air Force. He joined as an airman in December 2017 and left after roughly a year. In November 2018 he took a position as a Ticket Collector with the Indian Railways, a decision aligned with family considerations.
