Early life and backgroundSunil Valson was born on 2 October 1958 in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. An Indian by nationality, he is listed at about 1.78 m (5'10") in height with dark brown eyes and black hair. Valson came to prominence in domestic cricket as a left-arm fast-medium bowler who batted right-handed.
Career
Valson began to make an impact in domestic cricket in the early 1980s. He represented Tamil Nadu in the 1981–82 season, where a productive spell—taking 26 wickets in five matches—helped him earn selection for South Zone in the Duleep and Deodhar Trophy competitions. He later moved to play for Delhi and also turned out for Railways, representing multiple domestic teams during his career. He featured for South Zone and played in the Indian domestic circuit through the mid-1980s, finishing his principal first-class career in 1987.
Across his first-class career, Valson played 75 matches and bowled 9,945 deliveries, taking 212 wickets at an average of 25.35. His best innings return was 8 for 40, and his record includes six five-wicket hauls and one instance of ten wickets in a match. In List A cricket he appeared in 22 matches, claimed 23 wickets and recorded a best of 3 for 24.
Although primarily known for his bowling, Valson also contributed with the bat lower down the order. In first-class cricket he scored 376 runs from 64 innings, with a highest score of 38 and a batting average of 9.40. In List A matches he added 16 runs across seven innings.
1983 World Cup
Valson earned wider public attention when he was named in India’s 14-member squad for the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He was the only squad member who did not play a match during the tournament, though he served as the 12th man in at least one game, including the match in which Kapil Dev played his famous unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe. In a pre-tournament practice fixture against New Zealand he dismissed openers John Wright and Bruce Edgar, but he did not make an international appearance in the World Cup.
After the World Cup Valson continued his domestic career and was part of the Railways side that reached the Ranji Trophy final in 1987.
Post-playing career and administrative roles
Following his playing days, Valson moved into administrative and managerial roles connected to cricket and industry. He worked with the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) as a senior manager. When the Indian Premier League began in 2008, he joined GMR Sports, the group associated with the Delhi franchise, as an Associate Vice President. He later served as manager for Cricket Operations with the Delhi franchise and contributed to the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) as a member of its Cricket Improvement Committee.
Public profile
Valson’s place in India’s 1983 World Cup squad has brought him occasional media attention. In 2014 the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instituted an award dedicated to recognizing cricketers who have spent long periods on the sidelines, a gesture linked in public commentary to Valson’s own experience. His story was also represented on screen when the Bollywood film 83, which chronicles India’s 1983 World Cup triumph, included a portrayal of him by actor R. Badree. In interviews Valson has recalled the surprise of learning about his World Cup selection while playing club cricket in England and acknowledged that he understood selection to the playing XI would be difficult.
