Sunita Viswanath Biography

Sunita Viswanath is an American activist of Indian origin who has co‑founded multiple organizations focused on women’s rights, social justice, anti‑caste,·

Early life and background

Sunita Viswanath was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in 1968 and spent parts of her childhood in Chennai and London. She moved to the United States at age 19 to pursue higher education. Her academic background includes a BA in Mathematics from Douglass College, Rutgers University, and an MA in Sociology from SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai.

Raised in a traditional South Indian Hindu family, Viswanath describes herself as an anti‑caste Hindu. She has said that early experiences with caste practices shaped her commitment to social justice and motivated her later work as a human rights activist.

Career

Viswanath has worked in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors for more than three decades. In her mid‑20s she began her professional career at the Sister Fund, a private family foundation in the United States, where she explored the intersection of faith and feminism. After leaving that role she helped establish Women for Afghan Women (WAW) in 2001, a grassroots organization originally focused on the Afghan community in Queens that later expanded efforts to support women’s rights in Afghanistan. Viswanath served as WAW’s board chair until January 2022 and edited a 2002 volume of essays titled Women for Afghan Women: Shattering Myths and Claiming the Future.

In 2011 she co‑founded Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus, an organization that seeks to connect Hindu faith with social justice principles such as anti‑casteism and anti‑racism. Within Sadhana she helped launch Project Prithvi, an initiative addressing environmental impacts arising from certain worship practices and organizing beach clean‑ups and public awareness efforts in Queens. Sadhana has also collaborated with local cultural institutions to exhibit items recovered through these environmental efforts.

Viswanath is a co‑founder and has served as executive director of Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR), a U.S.‑based civil society group focused on defending human rights and articulating a vision of Hinduism in opposition to majoritarian or exclusionary ideologies. She has also taken on advisory and board roles with other organizations, including Unfreeze Afghanistan (from September 2021), the Population Media Center, and the Dalit Solidarity Forum. In 2022 she co‑founded Abaad: Afghan Women Forward with Masuda Sultan to provide humanitarian aid and economic support for Afghan women, including beneficiaries who had previously been served by WAW.

Public profile

Viswanath has received recognition for her advocacy. In 2011 she was awarded the Global Women’s Rights Award by the Feminist Majority Foundation for her work with Women for Afghan Women. In 2015 she was named among 12 faith leaders honored as Champions of Change at the White House for environmental and community work connected with Sadhana. The Center for American Progress included her on a 2021 list of 21 faith leaders to watch.

Her activism has also generated controversy. Her 2020 appointment as Religious Life Advisor at Columbia University prompted a student petition calling for her removal; the university ultimately continued to support her role. The Hindu American Foundation filed a defamation lawsuit in 2021 naming her among others; that case was dismissed in 2022. Viswanath is a frequent critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has written on issues she sees as discriminatory toward religious minorities in India. In 2020 she was prevented from entering Ayodhya and had to return from the border of Barabanki and Faizabad.

Personal life

Viswanath is married and has three sons named Gautama, Akash, and Satya. Her first husband was Suketu Mehta; her current spouse is Stephen Shaw. She is described as having black eyes, salt‑and‑pepper hair, and an approximate height of 165 cm (about 5 feet 5 inches). She holds American nationality.

Latest updates

In March 2022 Viswanath joined a Women’s Delegation for Peace and Education that traveled to Afghanistan to advocate for women’s rights and deliver humanitarian assistance. In August 2022 she and Masuda Sultan launched Abaad: Afghan Women Forward to provide humanitarian and economic support to Afghan women. She continues to contribute to public debates about religion, caste, and human rights and remains active in multiple nonprofit organizations and advisory roles.
