Supriya Sule was born Supriya Pawar on 30 June 1969 in Poona (present-day Pune), Maharashtra. Raised in a political family, she completed a B.Sc. in Microbiology from Jai Hind College in 1992. After her undergraduate studies she went to the United States, where she pursued postgraduate work in water pollution at the University of California, Berkeley. She later lived for periods in Indonesia and Singapore before returning to Mumbai.

Career

Sule’s professional life spans politics, agriculture and business, but she is best known for her role in Indian politics. She entered national politics when she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra in September 2006. In 2009 she contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Baramati constituency, a seat long associated with her family, and won by a large margin. She retained Baramati in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
