Early life and backgroundSuraj Venjaramoodu was born Suraj Vasudevan on 30 June 1976 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He attended K.V.M.L.P.S, Venjaramoodu for his school education and went on to study at the Government ITI in Attingal, where he completed a diploma in mechanical engineering. Raised in a family with a military connection—his father served in the Indian Army and his elder brother also followed a military career—Suraj originally aspired to join the armed forces but an injury interrupted that path.
Career
Suraj began performing in mimicry and comedy after finishing his diploma. He made his television debut in 2000 as the host of Comedy Thillana on Kairali TV, and his film debut came the following year in Jagapoka (2001). Early in his career he became known for imitating the Thiruvananthapuram accent and for comic roles in Malayalam cinema.
Over time Suraj established himself as a versatile performer across film and television. He gained wide recognition for the comic character Dasamoolam Damu in the 2009 film Chattambinaadu, and he played a breakthrough supporting part as Appukuttan in Thuruppugulan (2006). He has taken both comic and non-comic parts, moving away from typecasting with notable dramatic turns. In 2016 he portrayed Pavithran in Action Hero Biju, a role that departed from his usual comic persona, and the same year he played a more intense police character in Karinkunnam 6's. He returned to comedy in big commercial projects such as Pulimurugan (2016).
Suraj has worked with superstar Mammootty in multiple films and also served as Mammootty’s Malayalam tutor for the 2005 film Rajamanikyam. He has appeared in numerous other films in comic roles, including Classmates (2006), Pachakkuthira (2006), Chotta Mumbai (2007), Hallo (2007) and Mayavi (2007). He took his first lead role in the feature Duplicate (2009).
On television, beyond hosting Comedy Thillana, he has fronted several other shows: Jagapoga (2013) on Kairali TV, Comedy Super Nite (2015) on Flowers TV, Comedy Nights with Suraj (2019) on Zee Keralam and Adi Mone Buzzer (2022) on Asianet. He has also appeared as a judge on programs such as Comedy Stars Season 1 (2011) and Bhima Jewels Comedy Festival (2013), and acted in serials including Ladies Hostel (2005) and Junior Chanakyan (2015).

At the Kerala State Film Awards he received multiple Best Comedian awards (2009, 2010, 2013) and Best Actor in 2019 for performances in Vikruthi and Android Kunjappan Version 5.25. His honors also include recognition from South Indian and North American film award bodies, as well as several Asianet Film Awards and Vanitha Film Awards. Critics and peers have acknowledged both his comic gifts and his dramatic range.
