Early life and background

Surekha Punekar was born on 29 November 1978 in Pune, Maharashtra. She grew up in a family with limited means and left school at a young age. By eight years old she had begun performing dance, and her early appearances included very small audiences. Her upbringing in Pune and early start in performance shaped a career rooted in the regional folk traditions of Maharashtra.

Career

Punekar established herself as a lavani dancer, earning recognition within Maharashtrian stage and film circles. She is also credited as a playback singer for a number of Marathi films and has worked as a stage director; in 2011 she made her directorial debut with the play Nashikchi Naar. Her career in television includes an appearance on the show Eka Peksha Ek Apsara Aali, and she later reached a wider national audience when she took part in Bigg Boss Marathi season 2 in 2019.

Public profile

Known by the sobriquet Lavni Samradni, Punekar’s public image is tied to the lavani tradition — a fast-paced folk dance form from Maharashtra. Her physical profile as reported lists her height at approximately 163 cm (around 5'4") and a reported weight figure; eye and hair colour are described as black. She is identified as Indian by nationality and follows Hinduism. Reports also note a political leaning toward the Indian National Congress, and during the 2019 general election there was speculation linking her to a potential run for the Pune Lok Sabha seat, although that contest was ultimately carried by another candidate.

Personal life

Publicly available details about Punekar’s family are minimal. Information about a spouse or parents is not provided in the available material. Her birthplace and hometown are both listed as Pune, and she has been associated with a working-class background and early employment outside the arts before establishing herself as a performer. Her listed hobbies include listening to music and travelling.

Latest updates

In 2019, Punekar’s appearance on Bigg Boss Marathi season 2 brought her increased visibility beyond regional stages. Earlier, in 2011, she expanded her role in the performing arts by directing a stage production. She continues to be recognised for her performances in lavani and for contributions as a playback singer in Marathi cinema.
