Surekha Sikri Rege was born on 19 April 1945 in Almora, in what is now Uttarakhand. She grew up in a family with connections to both the armed forces and education; her father served in the air force and her mother worked as a teacher. Sikri completed formal training in theatre and drama, graduating from the National School of Drama in New Delhi in 1968 after earlier studies that included time at Aligarh Muslim University.

Career

Sikri built a long career across stage, film and television. After her NSD training she worked extensively in theatre before moving into film and television. Her first notable film appearance came in the 1978 political drama Kissa Kursi Ka. Over the following decades she became a familiar character actor, performing supporting roles in Hindi and Malayalam films as well as in television serials.

Her body of work received national recognition late in her career when she was awarded the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 2018 release Badhaai Ho (award presented in 2019).
