Early life and background

Surendra Pal Singh was born on 25 September 1953 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a middle-class family, his father served as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Uttar Pradesh. He grew up with five brothers, two of whom joined the Indian Army and one who entered the police service. Surendra completed his schooling under the UP Board and went on to graduate in Ghaziabad.

As a young man he decided to pursue acting rather than follow his father's preference for a career in the armed forces or police. In 1980, at about twenty-four years old, he left home for Mumbai to try his luck in films.

Career

Surendra Pal made his cinematic debut in the 1981 Hindi film Shama. Early parts in films such as Grahasti (1984) and a notable turn in J. P. Dutta’s Ghulami (1985) helped establish him as a character actor. Over the years he has appeared in more than 40 films, with credits that include Khuda Gawah (1992), Lakshya (2004), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Airlift (2016), and Rangoon (2017).

Television success came with B. R. Chopra’s Mahabharat (1988), in which he played Dronacharya. The role made him a household name and remains one of his best-known portrayals. After Mahabharat he continued to work regularly on television in a variety of roles, including Mahamatya Rakshas in Chanakya (1991), Dhundh in The Zee Horror Show (1995), Tamraj Kilvish in Shaktimaan (1997), Kailashnath in Shagun (2001), Guruji in Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki Season 2 (2005), and Prajapati Daksha in Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev (2011). It was 23 years after Mahabharat that he returned to another major mythological part as Prajapati Daksha.

His portrayal of Tamraj Kilvish in the superhero series Shaktimaan was widely popular with younger viewers; the character’s catchphrase became well known and the role involved creative approaches to makeup and costuming.

Beyond Hindi cinema and television, Surendra Pal has worked in regional films as well. He has credits in Malayalam and Tamil cinema and has both acted in and produced Rajasthani-language films such as Pakki Herogiri (2016) and Nani Bai Ro Mayro (2017), and is active in promoting Rajasthani film projects.

Public profile

Surendra Pal is commonly identified by the roles that brought him visibility on Indian television, particularly Dronacharya and Tamraj Kilvish. He is often referred to by the nickname Bhaiya. Physically, he is about 1.88 meters (6 feet 2 inches) tall, with black eyes and salt-and-pepper hair.
