Surendra Prasad Yadav was born on 2 January 1959 in Chiraiya village of Rampur block in Gaya district, Bihar. Raised in a rural household, his father Bhuneshwar Yadav worked as a farmer. Yadav later attended Magadh University in Bodh Gaya and completed postgraduate studies. He is known locally by the sobriquet Magadh Samrat.
