Early life and background

Surendran K. Pattel was born on 29 May 1971 in Kasaragod, Kerala, India. He grew up in a large family; his parents worked as daily wage labourers and he has multiple siblings, including a sister. Pattel attended Government Higher Secondary School in Balal, Kerala, and completed his schooling there.

Financial necessity shaped his early years. After finishing high school he worked to support his family, including rolling beedis and taking on other manual jobs. He later returned to higher education, enrolling in pre-degree and undergraduate studies in Kerala. Despite attendance challenges tied to his need to work, he completed a BA in Political Science from Payyannur College and earned an LLB from the Government Law College in Kozhikode.

Career

Pattel began his legal career in Kerala. From 1996 to 2004 he served as a senior associate with P. Appukuttan & Associates in Hosdurg, handling a broad range of civil and criminal matters, election law, matrimonial disputes, and labour and industrial law. In 2005 he and his wife moved to New Delhi, where he practised at the Supreme Court of India until 2007.

The family emigrated to the United States in 2007 when his wife took up nursing work. After arriving in the U.S., Pattel worked in sales for Koger and later pursued legal credentials. He took the Texas Bar Examination in 2009 and passed on his first attempt. He also completed an LLM at the University of Houston Law Center.

Establishing roots in Texas, Pattel founded PKS Law Firm, PLLC in July 2015. He became active in local legal organizations, including the Fort Bend Bar Association, the Harris County Bar Association, the State Bar College, and the Exchange Club of Sugar Land. In March 2022 the National Academy of Family Law included him among the top ten lawyers working in Texas.

Political career and judgeship

Pattel joined the Democratic Party and began pursuing a judicial role. He sought the party’s nomination in 2020 for the 505th District Court but lost the primary. In 2022 he was selected as the Democratic nominee for the 240th District Court in Fort Bend County. His campaign ran under the slogan “Firm on Law, Fair on Justice,” and emphasized perceived shortcomings in the justice system.

On 8 November 2022 Pattel won the general election for the 240th District Court by a narrow margin of 194 votes over the Republican candidate Edward Krenek. He was sworn in as judge of the 240th District Court on 1 January 2023.
