Early life and backgroundSuresh Gopi was born on 26 June 1958 in Kollam, Kerala. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and went on to earn a Master of Arts in English Literature in 1982 from Kerala University. He attended Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian School and later studied at Fatima Mata National College in Kollam. Gopi grew interested in films during his college years after watching performances by actors such as Kamal Haasan.
Career
Gopi’s screen journey began as a child actor in the 1965 film Odayil Ninnu. He returned to cinema as a credited actor in Niramulla Ravulkal (1986) and took supporting parts across the late 1980s, performing both antagonistic and heroic roles. Early appearances included parts in films such as T. P. Balagopalan M. A., Irupatham Noottandu, Oru CBI Diary Kurippu and Manu Uncle.
In the 1990s he rose to stardom, frequently cast as strong, action-oriented characters — often police or army officers — in collaborations with directors and writers who helped shape that era of Malayalam action films. Breakthrough lead roles included Harikrishnan in Thalastaanam (1992) and memorable performances as Madhavan IPS in Ekalavyan (1993), Commissioner Bharathchandran IPS in Commissioner (1994) and dual roles in Highway (1995). He also demonstrated range in parts such as the Theyyam artist Kannan in Kaliyattam (1997), a role that earned him national and state recognition.
Across a filmography of more than 250 titles, Gopi continued to take varied parts: from Colonel in Rajaputran (1996) and Captain Jacob Stephen in Lelam (1997) to roles in Thenkasipattanam (2000), Makalkku (2005), Janakan (2010), Apothecary (2014) and My God (2015). After a hiatus following My God, he returned to acting with the Tamil film Tamilarasan (completed in March 2019 and released in 2023). Subsequent roles included Major Unnikrishnan in Varane Avashyamund (2020), Circle Inspector Abraham Mathew ‘‘Paappan’’ in Paappan (2022) and a part in Ottakkomban, slated for 2024 release.
Gopi has also worked on television, hosting shows such as the Malayalam version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2012 and a 2021 game show modeled on Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?. He has performed as a playback singer and engaged in social work alongside his screen career.
Politics
In 2016 Gopi was appointed to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India under the eminent persons category. Later that year, on 19 October 2016, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He contested elections from the Thrissur constituency at both parliamentary and state assembly levels, coming third in earlier attempts. In 2024 he won the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat, marking the BJP’s first Lok Sabha victory in Kerala for that constituency. On 9 June 2024 he took oath as Minister of State in the central government; within hours he expressed a desire to be relieved citing film commitments, and on 10 June 2024 he confirmed he would continue serving in the Prime Minister’s cabinet.
Public profile
Gopi’s on-screen persona as an action hero translated into a public image of assertive patriotism; he is publicly supportive of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His career has earned significant industry recognition, including the National Film Award and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for Kaliyattam in 1998. He has been nominated for Filmfare Awards South for his performances in later films.
He has been noted for charitable acts toward colleagues and industry figures. During the COVID-19 period he assisted the family of the late actor Ratheesh by clearing debts, supporting education costs and presenting a wedding souvenir. He has also been willing to express candid views on industry issues such as caste discrimination and has spoken publicly on the subject.
Gopi’s time with the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes ended after he resigned in response to a fine he considered unfair. He is a cricket enthusiast and often seen supporting the sport.

Gopi married Radhika Nair on 8 February 1990. The couple are parents to four children: two sons, Gokul Suresh and Madhav Suresh, and two daughters, Bhagya Suresh and Bhavni Suresh. The family suffered the loss of another daughter, Lakshmi, who died in a road accident at about one and a half years of age. His parents were K. Gopinathan Pillai, a film distributor, and V. Gnanalekshmi Amma, who passed away in 2012. He has three younger brothers: Subhash Gopi, Sunil Gopi and Sanil Gopi (Sunil and Sanil are twins).
