Early life and background

Suresh Kumar Raina was born on 27 November 1986 in Muradnagar, Ghaziabad, in Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a Kashmiri Pandit family and spent much of his childhood living away from home in hostels. Raina attended the Government Sports College in Lucknow, where he began playing competitive cricket. He was captain of the under-16 Uttar Pradesh side and was noticed by national selectors at 15, an early turning point that led to a call-up for India’s under-19 tour of England.

Raina is commonly known by nicknames such as Sanu and Sonu; he says the latter came from childhood gaming partners. His family includes his father, Tirlokchand Raina, a retired army officer, his mother Parvesh Raina, three elder brothers and an elder sister. He lists Rajnagar, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh as his hometown.

Career

Raina established himself as a dynamic left-handed batsman who could anchor an innings or accelerate when required. He made his One Day International debut on 30 July 2005 against Sri Lanka in Dambulla. His Twenty20 international debut came on 1 December 2006 against South Africa in Johannesburg, and he earned his first Test cap on 26 July 2010 versus Sri Lanka in Colombo. Notably, he scored a century on his Test debut.

Over the course of his career he represented domestic and franchise sides including Uttar Pradesh, India Blue, Gujarat Lions and most prominently Chennai Super Kings. He wore the number 3 jersey for India and in the IPL. Raina became the first Indian to score a century in each international format and reached several IPL milestones: he was the first player to cross 3,000 runs in the competition, the first to score 400-plus runs across all IPL seasons up to 2016, and the first Indian (and second worldwide at the time) to hit 100 sixes in the IPL. He also holds the record for having played the most ODIs before making a Test debut.

His last international appearances came in the late 2010s: his final Test was on 6 January 2015 against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and his last One Day International was on 17 July 2018 versus England at Headingley. He played his final T20 international on 8 July 2018 against England at the County Ground. On 6 September 2022, Raina announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket.

On the field Raina was known for a calm demeanour and a favourite stroke, the pull shot. He credited mentors such as Deepak Sharma and S.P. Krishnan for guidance during his development. He also has a long-standing bond with Chennai Super Kings, having never missed a match for the franchise during his time with them.

Public profile

Raina’s public image combines his sporting achievements with a range of personal interests. He collects cricket bats and has amassed more than 250, a hobby he traces back to his first bat given by his father. He enjoys travel and adventure activities such as snorkelling, water sports and paragliding. Raina can play the saxophone and has tried his hand at singing; he performed a song for the 2015 film Meeruthiya Gangsters.

He married his childhood friend Priyanka Chaudhary on 3 April 2015; the couple have a daughter, Gracia Raina. Raina lists favourite cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni, and names M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as one of his preferred grounds.

Raina’s career has included controversies that received media attention. Incidents referenced in public reports range from a deleted tweet that he later apologised for to allegations raised by third parties regarding impropriety; he has also been involved in a legal matter related to COVID-19 protocol breaches that was resolved with bail. In 2024, a social-media incident following a veterans’ match drew criticism and a police complaint from disability rights groups.

Style and interests

Raina’s off-field interests extend to food and hospitality. He has a noted affinity for diverse cuisines and opened Raina Indian Restaurant in Amsterdam in June 2023. His collection of cars has included models such as a Porsche Boxster and a Mini Cooper. He also has a visible personal motto, having tattooed the word ‘Believe’ on his right arm.
