Early life and backgroundSuresh Selvarajan was born on 13 October 1982 in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. He completed schooling at Ramaswamy Chettiar Town High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Pondicherry University in 2003. From a young age he showed an affinity for painting and watercolours, winning a state award for painting when he was nineteen. He lists travelling, cycling, swimming and trekking among his personal interests.
Career
Selvarajan trained under noted production designer Sabu Cyril, beginning his film career as an assistant and contributing to many of Cyril’s projects over nearly a decade. Early credits include assistant art director work on Hindi films such as Om Shanti Om, Aladin, Ra.One and Agneepath.
He moved into production design and art direction for commercials and feature films, building a portfolio that spans Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema. His debut credit as a production designer is listed for Om Shanti Om (2007), and he later worked on major film projects including Enthiran (Robot) (2010), Ra.One (2011) and Krrish 3 (2013).
Selvarajan expanded his feature-film production-design work through the 2010s. He served as production designer on Brothers and Radiopetti in 2015, Iru Mugan (2016), Bharath Ane Nenu (2018), Petta (2019) and Acharya (2022). His collaboration with director Koratala Siva began on Bharath Ane Nenu, where he recreated a State Legislative Assembly inside a studio and built an elaborate temple set that was expensive to construct despite appearing briefly on screen. That project led to further work with Koratala Siva, including Acharya.
Acharya brought one of Selvarajan’s most ambitious projects: the made-up town of Dharmasthali. The set covered roughly 20 acres and included a temple, tribal area and river bed. Planning and construction for Dharmasthali took several months; the town was later reused for another production. A fire damaged parts of the Acharya set in February 2023.
Selvarajan’s recent film work includes Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal (released December 2023), for which he fabricated a 500 kg machine-gun prop from steel over a period of months rather than relying on CGI. His commercial work has included campaigns for brands such as Coca-Cola, ICICI Life, Audi, Kalyan Jewelers, Lux and Britannia, among others.
