Early life and background

Surinder Singh Dehal was born on 23 July 1998 in Dehlan, Una, Himachal Pradesh. He grew up in Una and attended Government Senior Secondary School Dehlan before moving on to Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, where he completed a Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports. Raised in a Sikh family, his father Jaswant Singh worked as a driver and his mother is a homemaker. He has at least one younger brother, Sandeep Singh.

Surinder’s sporting beginnings came at school under coach Sushil. He later joined the Sports Authority of India hostel in Bilaspur for further development but returned to his village after two years due to family reasons. Even after leaving the hostel he continued to play locally, building strength and technique with improvised training such as practising with a sand-filled sack and regular gym work.

Career

Surinder emerged through state and junior national competitions representing Una and Himachal Pradesh. As a junior he took part in the 42nd and 43rd Junior National Kabaddi Championships in 2016. He progressed to senior national events, competing in multiple Senior National Kabaddi Championships between 2016 and 2022, including tournaments at Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Roha (Raigad), Jaipur, Ayodhya and Charkhi Dadri.

On coach Jaipal’s recommendation, Surinder joined Pro Kabaddi League talent programs in 2017, taking part in the Future Kabaddi Heroes and New Young Players initiatives. U Mumba acquired him from those youth programs for PKL Season 5 and then retained him for Season 6 and Season 7. Playing alongside established defenders such as Fazel Atrachali and guided by veteran Anup Kumar, Surinder developed into a reliable right‑cover defender known for quick dashes and timely tackles.

In PKL Season 6 (2018) he set a notable mark by becoming the first player to assist 100 tackles in a single Pro Kabaddi League season. His career in the league has included spells with U Mumba and Telugu Titans, and in 2021 he was signed by Telugu Titans for Season 8. U Mumba brought him back for Season 9 in 2022 and appointed him club captain; he remained the team’s skipper for Season 10 (2023–24). Outside the PKL, Surinder has played for Punjab Kings in the Star Kabaddi League, appearing for them from the first season and continuing through seasons two and three.

Domestically, he has represented local outfits such as Narwal Academy and Una in state competitions, including the Himachal Pradesh Kabaddi Championship in 2022.
