Early life and background

Surjit Bindrakhia was born Surjit Bains on 15 April 1962 in the village of Bindrakh in Rupnagar district, Punjab, India. He grew up in a family that worked the land; farming remained important to him throughout his life and he enjoyed spending time in the fields of his native village.

Raised in a household where his father, Sucha Singh, was a wrestler, Surjit trained in wrestling as a young man and earned a gold medal in an inter-university wrestling championship. Despite his father’s interest in him pursuing the sport, Surjit’s passion was music. He began performing folk songs with his university’s bhangra team before moving into professional recording.

Career

Surjit launched his recording career in the early 1990s. His debut album, Munda Ki Mangda, was released in 1991; the project brought him into collaboration with composer-producer Atul Sharma and lyricist Shamsher Sandhu, a writer who would remain central to many of Surjit’s songs. In 1992 he released the single Bas Kar Bas Kar on the T-Series label, and in 1994 he recorded Dupatta Tera Satrang Da, one of the tracks that helped raise his profile.

Surjit became widely known for dance-ready bhangra songs and for distinctive, extended vocal techniques. In 1992 he set a Guinness World Record for the longest alaap/hekk with a performance on the track Jugni from his Addi Utte Ghum album. While many of his releases were upbeat numbers, he also recorded devotional material, releasing religious albums such as Kamban Dil Gaddaran De (1992), Janam Dihara Khalse Da (1999), and Singho Sewadar Bano (2001).

One of the high points of his later career was the 2002 album Phulkari, which included Tera Yaar Bolda, the most successful song of his career. That song has gone on to reach millions of listeners online. Surjit also contributed to Punjabi cinema: in 1991 he sang and appeared in the film numbers Vaar Baba Banda Singh from Jatt Jeona Morh and Boliyan from Badla Jatti Da, and in 1994 he appeared in the live-performance song Akhara from Kachehari.

Throughout his career he collaborated with prominent Punjabi artists such as Gurdas Maan, Kuldeep Manak, Surinder Shinda, Dolly Guleria and others. His 2001 album Billiaan Akhiyaan included the song Ghungroo, which marked a music-video appearance by actor Sonu Sood.

Surjit adopted the stage name Bindrakhia to reflect his connection to his native village. He was known for a powerful singing style and for bringing traditional Punjabi folk energy to recorded bhangra music. His body of work included popular party tracks, film songs and devotional recordings, giving him a broad audience across different listeners of Punjabi music.

Personal life

Surjit married Preet Kamal in 1990. The couple had two children: a son, Gitaz Bindrakhia, who later became a singer and actor, and a daughter, Minaz Bindrakhia. His parents were Sucha Singh and Gurcharan Kaur, and he had at least one sister.

Death

On 17 November 2003 Surjit Bindrakhia died at his home in Phase-7, Mohali, Punjab. He was 41 years old. His death was reported as a cardiac arrest.

Legacy and tributes

After his passing, fellow Punjabi artists acknowledged his influence. In 2005 Babbu Maan released the album Pyaas, which included a tribute song titled Pind Diyan Juhaan. Surjit’s son Gitaz has released songs that pay homage to his father, including Bindrakhia (2012) and Gal Baap Di (2021). Many of Surjit’s tracks remain popular with listeners, and his recordings—especially some of his later hits—continue to be streamed widely.
