Early life and background

Surya Vardhan Azad was born on 18 March 1987 in Delhi, India. Raised in a family with strong ties to cricket and public life, he is the son of former Indian cricketer and politician Kirti Azad and Poonam Jha Azad. He spent his formative years in Delhi and went on to study at St. Stephen's College, Delhi.

From a young age Azad was drawn to the game his father played; he represented Delhi at various age-group levels during his youth. Although he did not go on to play first-class cricket, the sport remained a central part of his life.

Career

Azad is an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium. He has been associated with the Singapore Cricket Club and plays for the P&G Warriors, a club side that competes in Singapore. After relocating to Singapore in 2017 he became an active member of the cricket community there.

His involvement with the Singapore Cricket Club has included on-field competition and off-field roles. Azad was recognised at the club’s Cricket Section Award Night in 2019, and in 2021 he served as the club’s social secretary, a position that reflects his engagement with the club beyond playing.

Away from competitive cricket, Azad co-founded a travel and food blog called Wayfarers and Wasabi in 2016 with his wife, Shruti Azad. The project showcases an interest in travel, food and storytelling alongside his sporting pursuits.

Azad maintains a public presence on social media, including Instagram, where he shares glimpses of his life. His posts indicate an interest in fitness—he frequently posts workout pictures—and social activities. His Instagram profile also references a fondness for beer.

His family life is part of his public persona: he is married to Shruti Azad, who is described as a YouTuber and social media influencer. He has a brother, Somya Vardhan Azad. Azad’s familial connections and his own activities combine to make him a recognizable figure within the niche of cricketing circles and social media.

Beyond cricket and food writing, Azad has shown interest in environmental causes; he has expressed support for efforts to expand the Galápagos Marine Reserve. He also displays a visible interest in fitness and travel, which are recurring themes in his public posts.
