Early life and background

Surya Kumar Ashok Yadav was born on 14 September 1990 in Hathora village in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a middle-class family and spent part of his childhood playing street cricket in Varanasi before moving to Mumbai with his family at age ten. His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, worked as a chief engineer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and the family lived in a BARC colony in Chembur, where Surya began formal cricket training.

In Mumbai he balanced cricket with other sports such as badminton as a boy. Encouraged by his father, he enrolled at a cricket camp in the colony and later trained at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy under coaches including Ashok Kamat and Dilip Vengsarkar. His early development included age-group and club cricket, with his paternal uncle Vinod Kumar also contributing to his coaching in Varanasi.

Career

Suryakumar Yadav is a right-handed middle-order batsman who made his international T20 debut for India on 14 March 2021 against England. He went on to make his ODI debut on 18 July 2021 versus Sri Lanka and played his first Test on 9 February 2023 against Australia.

Before international cricket, Yadav established himself in India’s domestic and franchise circuits. He has represented Mumbai across formats and appeared for teams such as India A, India Under-23, India C, India Red, India Blue, West Zone, and corporate side BPCL. In the Indian Premier League, he has worn jerseys for Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.

His batting is notable for range and inventiveness, earning him nicknames such as SKY and Mr. 360 for the variety of scoring options he employs. He favours the sweep as a signature shot and combines traditional and improvisational strokes—uppercuts, ramps, inside-out drives, and reverse sweeps—to attack all around the ground.

Yadav’s domestic breakthrough came during the 2011–12 Ranji Trophy season, when a double-century and consistent run-scoring for Mumbai marked a turning point in his career. He was the leading run-scorer for Mumbai that Ranji season and had earlier amassed over 1,000 runs at Under-22 level in 2010–11, winning the MA Chidambaram Trophy.

On the international stage, Yadav has achieved several notable milestones in T20 cricket. He became the fastest to 1,000 T20I runs, reached 1,578 runs in 45 T20 internationals at an exceptionally high strike rate, and ranked first in the ICC T20 batting rankings in January 2023. He was among the tournament’s top performers at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, finishing as one of India’s leading run-scorers. In 2023 he added further highlights, including a century in a T20I against Sri Lanka and becoming the fifth cricketer worldwide to score three or more centuries in men’s T20Is. He has also been recognised with ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year awards for 2022 and for the 2023 award announced in January 2024.
