Early life and background

Suvendu Adhikari was born on 15 December 1970 in Contai, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. Raised in a family active in politics, he later completed higher studies at P. K. College, Contai, and earned a Master of Arts degree from Rabindra Bharati University in 2011. He is identified as belonging to the Brahmin caste and follows Hinduism.

Career

Adhikari began his political career in 1995 when he joined the Indian National Congress and won a councillor seat in Contai Municipality that same year. In 1998 he left Congress to become an early member of the All India Trinamool Congress, aligning with Mamata Banerjee’s newly formed party.

He entered the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2006 as the MLA for Kanthi Dakshin. Three years later he advanced to national politics by winning a Lok Sabha seat from the Tamluk constituency and retained that seat in the 2014 general election. In 2016 he returned to state-level politics, winning the Nandigram assembly seat and resigning his Lok Sabha membership. After the TMC won a second consecutive term in West Bengal that year, Adhikari was appointed to portfolios including Transport and Irrigation and Waterways.

Adhikari’s prominence grew from his leadership role in the anti-land acquisition agitation in Nandigram in 2007, a movement that raised his profile across the state. In December 2020, amid a public rift with the TMC leadership, he resigned his ministerial posts, stepped down as Nandigram MLA, and relinquished his primary membership in the TMC. Two days later, on 19 December 2020, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party along with a group of former TMC legislators and one MP.

In the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election he contested Nandigram against Mamata Banerjee and won by a narrow margin of 1,736 votes. Following that election, on 10 May 2021, he was chosen as Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. In 2024 he contested and won the Kanthi Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket.
