Suvra Mukherjee Biography

Suvra Mukherjee was an Indian vocalist, dancer, painter and author who served as First Lady of India during her husband Pranab Mukherjee’s presidency. Born

Early life and background
Suvra Mukherjee was born on 17 September 1940 in Jessore, then part of Bengal in British India (now within Narail district, Khulna division, Bangladesh). She and her family moved to Kolkata when she was about ten years old, around 1950. Suvra completed postgraduate studies in both political science and history, and she lived much of her life in India as an immigrant from what is now Bangladesh.

Career
Suvra pursued a number of creative paths across her life. She was known as a vocalist and dancer specialising in Rabindra Sangeet and appeared in dance-dramas that drew on the works of Rabindranath Tagore. In the late 1970s she founded a performing group called Geetanjali Troup, which focused on Tagore’s repertoire; she led the troupe for many years and frequently performed in its productions.

Beyond performance, Suvra was also a painter who credited her mother as an inspiration for her artistic work. She engaged in cultural projects that included support for musical recordings, helping launch albums of Rabindra Sangeet and devotional music for other artists.

Suvra contributed to education for a short time, teaching at the Birsinghpur Vidyasagar Balika Vidyalaya in West Midnapore’s Ghatal between February and August 1971. She also wrote two books: a travelogue about a visit to China titled Chena Achenai Chin, and Chokher Aloey, which recounts her interactions with the former prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Personal life and family
Suvra married Pranab Mukherjee on 13 July 1957. The couple had three children: two sons, Abhijit Mukherjee and Indrajit Mukherjee, and a daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee. The family experienced the loss of an infant son shortly after birth.

Suvra and her husband described a relationship shaped by mutual reliance and quiet devotion rather than overt displays of romance. She was a devoted follower of Bengali cultural traditions and an admirer of Rabindranath Tagore, and those interests shaped both her public activities and personal life.

Public profile
When Pranab Mukherjee became President of India, Suvra Mukherjee assumed the role of First Lady. She maintained a public profile rooted in culture and the arts, often performing and promoting Tagore’s works, and she developed friendships with veteran musicians and artists across India. In March 2013 she and her husband visited her ancestral home in Narail, where they received a traditional Bengali welcome; that visit was reported as her final trip abroad.

Illness and death
Suvra Mukherjee suffered from a prolonged respiratory illness and died on 18 August 2015 at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi. She was 74 years old. Her funeral rites were conducted at the Lodhi Road electric crematorium in New Delhi. Several prominent national leaders and dignitaries attended her last rites.

Legacy
Suvra Mukherjee is remembered for her contributions to the preservation and performance of Rabindra Sangeet, for founding and leading a Tagore-focused troupe, and for her artistic and literary pursuits. Her life combined cultural leadership, creative practice and public service during her years as First Lady.
