Early life and background

Suzanne Bernert was born on 26 September 1982 in Detmold, Germany. Raised in a German household, she developed an early interest in performing arts, taking part in puppet theatre and school stage events. In her late teens she pursued formal acting training in Berlin, completing a three-year course with actress and teacher Heidelotte Diehl and later studying under American acting coach Susan Batson. She is trained in classical ballet.

Career

Bernert moved to India to pursue acting after being offered a television role while living in Dubai. Her first notable television appearance was in Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani, where she played Catherine. She made her Bollywood debut in the 2004 film Stop! and went on to appear in multiple regional films, including Marathi and Bengali projects. Her Marathi credits include Gallit Gondhal, Dillit Mujra (2009), and she appeared in the Bengali film Iti Mrinalini (2011).

On Hindi television she became widely recognized for playing the foreign bahu Doris Tushar Bajaj in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, which brought her household visibility in 2006. In 2015 she portrayed Queen Helena in the historical series Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat. Bernert has taken on biographical and political portrayals as well, playing Sonia Gandhi in the 2014 ABP News television project 7 RCR…Projecting India’s Future and again in the feature film The Accidental Prime Minister (2019).

Her screen work has also included short films and promotional pieces; she acted in Padharo India to support Jaipur tourism and led the film Dusarya Jagatli — From Another World, which screened at the first Indian Berlin Film Festival and won a Maharashtrian award as Best Social Movie. Bernert and her husband have participated together on screen in projects such as the film Kram (2012) and the Doordarshan serial Mera Dil Deewana.

Beyond film and television, Suzanne has been active in theatre. She and Akhil Mishra managed a theatre group called Vijeta. She has also engaged in social causes, taking part in the Narmada Seva Yatra campaign organized by the government of Madhya Pradesh and working with Sulabh International.

Bernert is multilingual, speaking French, Italian, Spanish, Bengali, Marathi and Hindi in addition to her native German. To prepare for roles she has trained in regional dance forms; for example, she learned Lavani for a part in the Marathi film Gallit Gondhal, Dillit Mujra. She was the first foreign actress to compete on the Marathi celebrity dance show Dholkichya Talavar, reaching the semi-finals, and is noted as the first foreign actress to appear across both Hindi and Marathi television in at least 20 shows.

Her on- and off-screen choices have brought recognition from regional organisations: she received the Maharashtrian Kalabushan Award in 2014 for contributions to Marathi culture and a Rajasthan International Film Festival award in 2018 for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema and television.

Suzanne Bernert holds German nationality and is an Overseas Citizen of India. She married actor Akhil Mishra in a court ceremony on 3 February 2009 and later observed Hindu wedding rituals on 30 September 2011. The couple collaborated professionally and managed theatre work together. Her parents are Michael Bernert and Monika Bernert, and she has a brother, Philippe Bernert.
