Career

Maurya’s political life spans several decades and multiple parties. He began organising youth politics in the early 1980s, holding positions in Yuva Lokdal and later serving as Mahamantri of U.P. Lokdal through much of that decade. In 1991 he became General Secretary of Janata Dal, but left the party in 1996.

He joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on 2 January 1996 and quickly moved into leadership roles, including General Secretary and State Vice President for BSP in Uttar Pradesh. He was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Dalmau in 1996. During his years with BSP he held several cabinet-level portfolios in the state government at different times, including Khadi and Rural Industries, Revenue, Cooperative, Panchayati Raj, Land Development and Water Resources, and Dr. Ambedkar Rural Development. He also served repeatedly as leader of the house and as leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Maurya was elected from Padrauna and other constituencies at various points across multiple assemblies, serving five terms as an MLA. He was National President of the BSP for a period and was given additional ministerial responsibilities, such as Cooperative Minister in 2007–2009 and Panchayati Raj Minister from 2009 to 2012.

In June 2016 he resigned from BSP, citing internal grievances, and later that year launched the Loktantrik Bahujan Manch. He then joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and, after the 2017 elections, served as a cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, with responsibilities for Labour and Employment, Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation. His department was later titled Minister of Labour, Employment, Co-ordination. Maurya remained in that cabinet until he resigned on 11 January 2022.

On the day of his resignation from the BJP government he announced his move to the Samajwadi Party; his entry into Samajwadi Party was welcomed publicly by the party leadership. In February 2024 he relinquished the post of Samajwadi Party general secretary and said he wished to continue serving the party without an official position.

Public profile

Maurya comes from a family with political involvement: his daughter Sanghmitra Maurya was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019 representing Budaun as a BJP member, and his son Utkarsh Maurya is also active in politics. His parents are Badlu Maurya and Jagannathi Maurya, and he has three younger brothers and a younger sister.

He identifies as a follower of B. R. Ambedkar and converted from Hinduism to Buddhism in 2016. Publicly he has been a prominent OBC leader in Uttar Pradesh, and his career has included roles as leader of the opposition, leader of the house and several cabinet posts in state government.

Maurya is active on social media and has a significant following on Twitter. Over the years he has been visible at party rallies and public events, sometimes photographed alongside senior leaders from the parties he has been associated with.

A legal warrant was issued against Maurya on 12 January 2022 in relation to remarks he made in 2014 that were alleged to have hurt religious sentiments.
