Swastika Mukherjee was born on 13 December 1980 in Kolkata, West Bengal. She grew up in the city and completed her schooling at institutions including Carmel High School, St. Teresa’s Secondary School and Gokhale Memorial School. She went on to study at Jadavpur University and graduated with a degree in history. Swastika is the daughter of the late Bengali actor Santu Mukhopadhyay and her family background is rooted in the Bengali performing arts.

Mukherjee began her on-screen journey in television. While still a student at Jadavpur University, a television director cast her in the serial Devdasi.
