Early life and background

Swatantra Dev Singh was born on 13 February 1964 in Ori Village, Jamalpur Block, Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a family headed by father Allar Singh and mother Rama Devi, he belongs to the Kurmi community. He completed a bachelor's degree in biology from Bundelkhand University, Jhansi, in 1985. During his school years he was active in sports and captained his school wrestling team.

Career

Singh's public life began with student and youth activism. After a stint working as a reporter for the Hindi daily Swatantra Bharat in 1986, he became involved with the RSS and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He served as an organization minister with ABVP and then moved into Bharatiya Janata Party youth structures, holding successive posts in the BJP's youth wing through the 1990s, including state-level responsibilities.

He entered legislative office as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, serving from 7 July 2004 until 6 July 2010. Over the following years he advanced through party ranks in Uttar Pradesh: state general secretary, vice-president, state general minister and roles in charge of organisational work and campaigns. He was made the party's in-charge for West Uttar Pradesh and led membership drives and high-profile campaign events, including a Ganga Yatra in 2014.

In government, Singh has held ministerial responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh. In 2017 he was Minister of State for Transport, Protocol and Power, and in March 2022 he was appointed Minister of Jal Shakti and Disaster Management for the state. His resignation as party chief and cabinet minister followed controversy within the ministry and the resignation of a junior minister earlier that year.

Beyond administrative duties, Singh's work has been recognised with awards. In 2018 the SKOCH Group named him Transport Minister of the Year. In March 2022 he accepted, on behalf of the state, a Best State Award for Water Management and Conservation presented by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.

Throughout his political career Singh has been active on the campaign trail, organising rallies and outreach in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere; he played organisational roles during the 2014 and 2017 election cycles and participated in campaign efforts in Madhya Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
