Swati Maliwal was born on 15 October 1984 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in Ghaziabad and completed her schooling at Amity International School, Noida. After finishing Class 12 with strong marks in 2002, she earned a B.Tech. in Information Technology from JSS Academy of Technical Education (UPTU) in 2006. Her father, Ashok Maliwal, served in the Indian Army and is deceased; her mother, Sangita Maliwal, worked as a chemistry teacher. She has a sister named Ayesha Maliwal Bundy.

After graduating, Maliwal turned quickly to social work. She began by teaching children in Delhi’s slums and soon committed herself to longer-term social initiatives.
