Early life and background

T Dilip was born in Hyderabad in the state now known as Telangana. Sources list his date of birth as either 1 September 1980 or 1 September 1983; that discrepancy is reflected in differing age reports. He completed his schooling at St. Anthony's High School, Hyderabad, and went on to earn a Bachelor in Computer Science from Aurora's Degree and PG College. Dilip grew up playing cricket for school, college and club sides in Hyderabad and represented local A-division teams such as Cheerful and New Blues.

Career

Dilip began his working life balancing playing and coaching at the grassroots level. Early on he combined roles as a player-cum-coach for local clubs, and he supplemented his income by giving mathematics tuition while building his coaching credentials. He attended coaching certification courses and ranked in the top three during a Level-1 coaching session in 2004.

From about 2008 onward he served as a fielding coach across age-group teams in the Hyderabad Cricket Association Academy. His work there included stints with Under-14, Under-16, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-25 sides, as well as various women’s and junior Ranji Trophy teams. During this period he trained several youngsters who later went on to international careers, and he was mentored by former Indian fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar, who pointed him toward opportunities at the National Cricket Academy.

Dilip completed multiple refresher courses at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and elsewhere between 2007 and 2019, advancing through Level-A, Level-B and Level-C work. He expanded his exposure by working with established fielding coaches such as Trevor Penney and Jonty Rhodes. In 2017 he was appointed as fielding coach of India A for the Bangladesh series.

In November 2021 he was appointed to the coaching staff of the Indian national team, working alongside coaches including Rahul Dravid, Paras Mhambrey and Vikram Rathour. He gained wider visibility during the 2023 ODI World Cup when short video clips of him presenting medals to Indian players for their fielding efforts drew attention.
