T Natarajan Biography
T Natarajan is an Indian left-arm medium-pace bowler from Salem, Tamil Nadu, known for his skill in the death overs and rapid rise from local club cricket.
Early life and backgroundThangarasu Natarajan was born on 27 May 1991 in Salem, Tamil Nadu. He is the eldest of five children, with one brother and three sisters. His family comes from modest means: his father worked as a porter at a railway station and his mother runs a roadside snack stall. Growing up in that environment, Natarajan carried responsibilities for his family from an early age.
He began playing tennis-ball cricket like many youngsters in his area. A well-wisher from his village noticed his bowling potential and encouraged him to move to Chennai to pursue competitive cricket. There he joined local clubs and progressed through the leagues, representing BSNL in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s fourth division before moving up to first-division cricket with Vijay Cricket Club and later Jolly Rovers.
Career
Natarajan made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu on 5 January 2015 against Bengal at Eden Gardens. Early in his Ranji career he was reported for a suspect bowling action, but with help from former Tamil Nadu players he corrected the issue and returned to competitive cricket.
His performances in domestic T20 cricket raised his profile. He featured for the Dindigul Dragons in the inaugural Tamil Nadu Premier League in 2016. Natarajan’s ability to bowl effectively in the final overs earned him recognition as a T20 specialist and opened doors at higher levels.
In the Indian Premier League he was signed by Kings XI Punjab in 2007 for a significant fee. On the international stage he made rapid progress during the Australia tour in late 2020 and early 2021: he debuted in One-Day Internationals on 2 December 2020 and in T20 internationals on 4 December 2020, both against Australia at Manuka Oval. His Test debut came later, on 15 January 2021, against Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane. Natarajan is a left-arm medium-pace bowler and bats left-handed.
Across the first-class circuit he has recorded multiple four-wicket hauls, highlighting his ability to take key wickets. Lakshmipathy Balaji has been noted as a coach or mentor in his development.
Public profile
Natarajan’s story is often described in terms of his rise from humble beginnings to professional cricket. His performances in death overs made him a sought-after bowler in T20s, and that reputation contributed to his national team call-ups.
Outside cricket, he enjoys watching movies. He remains unmarried and there are no public records of a spouse. In April 2021 he received a Mahindra Thar SUV as a gift from industrialist Anand Mahindra; in return Natarajan signed and gave his Gabba Test jersey.
Latest updates
