Tabassum Biography
Tabassum (born Kiran Bala Sachdev; 9 July 1944–18 November 2022) was an Indian child actor who became a recognizable television host, actress, director, ý
Early life and backgroundTabassum was born on 9 July 1944 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Bombay Presidency, British India. Registered at birth as Kiran Bala Sachdev, she later became widely known by her screen name Tabassum. She grew up in a family with journalistic and nationalist roots: her father Ayodhyanath Sachdev worked in journalism and was associated with freedom movement figures, and her mother Asghari Begum was a journalist, author and active in public life. Tabassum attended Anjuman-I-Islam's Saif Tyabji Girls' High School and later studied at Aligarh Muslim University, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts.
Career
Tabassum’s screen life began extremely early. She started as a child actor at age three, making a cameo in the 1946 Hindi film Nargis and soon becoming known to audiences as Baby Tabassum. Over the late 1940s and early 1950s she appeared in a succession of films that brought her public recognition, including roles in Mera Suhaag, Bari Behen, Sangram, Afsana, Bahar and Baiju Bawra. A memorable on-screen moment was the picturisation of the song “Bachpan Ke Din Bhoolana Dena” in Deedar (1951), which featured the young Tabassum.
While still a child she also worked on radio: at four she hosted the All India Radio children’s programme Phulwari, where she sang, joked and engaged with young listeners. Her popularity as a child performer earned significant attention and earnings, and she remained a visible presence in the industry through the 1950s.
As an adult performer Tabassum returned to acting in lead roles in several Hindi and regional films, including Ganwaar, Heer Raanjha, Johny Mera Naam, Gambler, Shaadi Ke Baad and Maa Bahen Aur Biwi. These adult roles did not match the commercial success of her childhood films, and by the mid-1970s she had shifted much of her professional focus to television and other projects.
Tabassum achieved her greatest and longest-lasting fame as the host of Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, the pioneering Indian television talk show that aired on Doordarshan from 1972 until 1993. The format combined short interviews with celebrities alongside music and dance, and Tabassum’s conversational style, light humour and facility with shayari made the programme distinctive. Although she later said the financial compensation from Doordarshan was modest, the show established her as a household name and an influential television personality.
Beyond that flagship series she worked across media: she served as a radio jockey on Saridon Ke Saathi, hosted other television programmes including devotional and nostalgia-based shows, edited the Hindi women’s magazine Grihalakshmi for almost 15 years, and wrote more than ten books of jokes and Urdu shayaris. She also directed, produced and wrote the 1985 film Tum Par Hum Qurban (in which her son appeared) and was involved in a later directorial project that was shelved. Tabassum made cameo appearances in several films during the 1980s and 1990s and continued to appear on television, with roles in serials such as Pyaar Ke Do Naam: Ek Raadha, Ek Shyaam (2006) and Ladies Special (2009).
Public profile
Throughout her life Tabassum remained a visible figure in Indian entertainment. Colleagues and viewers knew her by multiple names—Kiran Bala Sachdev was her formal name, Tabassum her screen name, and she was often called Baby Tabassum in reference to her early career. She cultivated a public persona that embraced Urdu poetry and light humour, often wearing a flower in her hair as part of her TV persona. Her family connections included husband Vijay Govil, son Hoshang Govil (an actor and director), and actor Arun Govil among her relatives by marriage. She also helped introduce and support emerging performers during her career, drawing on decades of industry experience.
Personal life
Tabassum married actor-director Vijay Govil. The couple’s son, Hoshang Govil, worked in the film industry as an actor and director. Her parents’ backgrounds in journalism and public life shaped much of her early environment and public outlook. She described her personal approach to religion as rooted in humanity rather than strict sectarian identity.
