He grew up in a farming family; his father Karam Singh worked as a farmer and his mother Prit Pal Kaur was a homemaker. Tajinderpal has a sister named Navdeep Kaur. He attended Malwa College of Nursing in Kotkapura and holds a Bachelor of Physical Education.

As a youth he initially wanted to play cricket, but relatives recognised his natural strength and encouraged him to try shot put. His uncle Gurnam Singh had experience in the event and his father also supported the switch. Tajinderpal developed an early affinity for the shot put; family memories recall him carrying or sleeping with the shot during childhood. He comes from a Sikh background and grew up in Moga, Punjab.

Career

Toor began formal coaching under Mohinder Singh Dhillon in 2013 at the Government Arts & Sports College in Jalandhar. He progressed steadily through national and regional competition, finishing fifth at the World University Games in 2015 and recording a personal best of 20.40m at the 2017 Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in Patiala.

His breakthrough at continental level came with a silver medal at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships with a throw of 19.77m. The following year he established himself as a leading shot putter in Asia by winning gold at the 2018 Asian Games with a 20.75m effort, which also stood as a national record at the time. He finished eighth in the 2018 Commonwealth Games final.

In 2019 Toor won gold at both the South Asian Games and the Asian Championships. He continued to improve on the domestic scene, taking gold at the 2021 National Inter-State Athletics Championships with a 21.10m throw.

A defining moment in his career came in June 2021 at Indian Grand Prix-4, where he set an Asian record of 21.49m and broke his own national mark, securing qualification for the Tokyo Olympics. He continued to push the continental standard: on 19 June 2023 he extended his Asian record to 21.77m at the concluding day of the 62nd National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Kalinga Stadium, earning a berth for the World Championships.

Toor’s training and performance have been guided by coach Mohinder Singh Dhillon. Throughout his career he has battled and recovered from injuries, including a fractured wrist to his throwing arm during the COVID-19 period and a groin muscle pull in 2022 that prevented his participation at the Commonwealth Games that year.
