Tamim Iqbal Biography

Tamim Iqbal is a former Bangladeshi international cricketer known for his left-handed batting. Born in Chittagong in 1989, he became one of Bangladesh's主攻造

Early life and background

Tamim Iqbal was born on 20 March 1989 in Chittagong, Bangladesh. He comes from a cricketing family: his father is Iqbal Khan, his mother is Nusrat Iqbal, and his older brother Nafees Iqbal also played for Bangladesh. His uncle Akram Khan represented the country as well. Raised in Chittagong, Tamim developed an early passion for the game and grew into a left-handed batsman who would go on to become one of Bangladesh's leading run-scorers.

Career

Tamim made his One Day International debut on 9 February 2007 against Zimbabwe in Wellington. He played his first Twenty20 international on 1 September 2007 versus Kenya in Nairobi and made his Test debut on 4 January 2008 against New Zealand in Dunedin. Over a 16-year international career he established himself as an aggressive left-handed batter and also delivered occasional right-arm off-break bowling.

He was selected for Bangladesh's squad at the 2007 ICC World Cup very early in his career and produced a notable match-winning innings of 51 against India in that tournament. His performances in big events continued; in the 2011 World Cup he stood out with resilient batting against strong opposition despite the team result. Tamim became the first Bangladeshi to score centuries in all three international formats and earned recognition in the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, being named among Wisden's Cricketers of the Year and its Test Player of the Year in 2011.

Domestically and in franchise cricket, Tamim represented a number of teams, including Nottinghamshire, Pune Warriors, Duronto Rajshahi, Chittagong Kings/Vikings, Peshawar Zalmi, St Lucia Zouks, Wayamba United, Asia XI and others. In 2013 he was designated an International Elite player for the inaugural Caribbean Premier League.

Throughout his career he set multiple run-scoring milestones for Bangladesh. By January 2017 he was the team's second-highest run-scorer and had passed 3,000 runs in Tests and 4,000 runs in ODIs. He was also the first Bangladeshi to reach 1,000 runs in T20 internationals and finished as the leading run-scorer at the 2016 ICC World Twenty20.

On 6 July 2023 Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing to a close his 16-year run with the national side. His final international appearances included an ODI against Afghanistan on 5 July 2023 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium and a Test match on 4 April 2023 versus Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. His last T20 international had been on 9 March 2020 against Zimbabwe.

Public profile

Tamim is known for an attacking style of play and often wore the number 28 jersey for Bangladesh. He has been vocal at times about the treatment and pay of national players in franchise competitions. He lists cricketing greats such as Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi among his favorites.

Personal life

Tamim is married to Ayesha Siddiqa. The couple have a son, Mohammed Arham Iqbal, who was born in February 2016. Tamim's listed physical stats include a height of approximately 175 cm (5'9") and a weight around 64 kg. He is identified as Muslim and enjoys swimming as a hobby.
