Tania Shergill (Indian Army) Biography

Captain Tania Shergill is an Indian Army officer from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, known for becoming the first woman Parade Adjutant at the 2020 Army Day Parade. A

Early life and background

Tania Shergill was born in 1993 and raised in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. She comes from a family with a long military tradition: her father, grandfather and great-grandfather all served in the Indian Army. Her great-grandfather served in the Sikh Regiment during World War II and took part in the Burma campaign. Shergill attended Kendriya Vidyalaya in Mumbai while her father was posted in Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast.

Education

Shergill earned a B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication from Priyadarshini College of Engineering in Nagpur. During the final year of her engineering studies she applied to the Officers Training Academy. She completed her officer training at OTA, Chennai, and was commissioned into the Corps of Signals in 2017.

Career

Commissioned into the Corps of Signals in 2017, Shergill holds the rank of Captain. She served as a Parade Adjutant on Army Day, 15 January 2020, becoming the first woman to hold that appointment for the Indian Army’s Army Day Parade at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment. The Parade Adjutant is the officer responsible for directing and conducting the parade.

Following the Army Day parade, Shergill was selected to lead an all-male contingent of 146 personnel during the 2020 Republic Day Parade on 26 January, saluting the President of India on command. That appointment made her the second woman to lead an all-male contingent at the Republic Day Parade, after Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi in 2019.

Public profile

Shergill’s role at the Army Day Parade brought significant public attention. She has described service in the uniform as equalizing, saying that once an individual wears the uniform they are an officer regardless of background. Her parents, who had relocated to Garhdiwala in Hoshiarpur after her father retired in 2017, attended the Army Day event.

Her appearance as Parade Adjutant drew reactions from public figures and social media; a widely shared video of her leading the parade received praise and boosts in visibility following posts from prominent accounts.

Personal life

Shergill follows Sikhism and is unmarried. She is the only child of Surat Singh Gill, a retired army officer who served in the 101 Medium Regiment (Artillery), and Lakhwinder Kaur Gill, a homemaker. Shergill lists hiking, wildlife photography and travelling among her hobbies. Her height is approximately 170 cm (5 feet 7 inches), and her eye and hair color are both black.

Latest updates

As of 2019–2020 she continued to serve in the Indian Army with the Corps of Signals and held the rank of Captain. Her high-profile role in early 2020 — as Parade Adjutant on Army Day and as leader of an all-male Republic Day contingent — remains the most notable milestone publicly recorded about her service to date.
