Tanushree Kaushal was born on 23 July in Mumbai, where she also grew up. Her parents include her mother, Bina Kaushal, and her father Kaushal Bharati, a writer and director who worked on dialogue for Hindi films. She has a brother, Ashwin Kaushal, who is also an actor.

Career

Kaushal began her acting journey on the stage, performing in plays across several languages including Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and Punjabi. From theatre she transitioned into television, taking on small parts and supporting roles in early 2000s serials and television films.

Her on-screen work in the early part of the decade included appearances in Dial 100 (2001), Ssshhhh… Koi Hai (2002) and Rooh (2004). In 2003 she appeared on film as Riya, the mother of Coco, in Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne. She also featured in television commercials during this period.

Kaushal came to wider attention playing antagonistic characters in daily soaps. In 2004 she appeared in the Sahara One series Malini Iyer alongside Sridevi. Two years later she achieved greater recognition for her portrayal of Menka Garodia, a manipulative stepmother, on Zee TV’s Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann. The following year she was seen as Bulbul in Zee TV’s Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka.
