Tanveer Sangha Biography

Early life and background

Tanveer Sangha was born on 26 November 2001 in Liverpool, Sydney, New South Wales. Raised in Ingleburn, NSW, he grew up in a Sikh family and spent his early years encouraged by his father to try a variety of sports, including rugby, kabaddi, volleyball, football and cricket. He attended East Hills Boys High School in Panania.

Sangha began his organized cricket with Liverpool Catholic Club at under-10 level and progressed through the club’s junior ranks. He later played for Ingleburn RSL Cricket Club and moved on to represent Campbelltown Camden District Cricket Club, known as The Ghosts, in under-17 competition. His first club is listed as Ingleburn.

Family

His parents are Joga Sangha and Upjeet Singh. His father worked as a taxi driver and his mother as an accountant. He has an older sister, Simran Singh, and a cousin named Navi Nahal. Sangha is unmarried and is described as single.

Career

Originally a batting and fast-bowling all-rounder in his younger days, Sangha transitioned into leg-spin as his career progressed. He bowls right-handed and bats right-handed.

Sangha represented Australia at youth level, playing for the Australia Under-16 team in 2016 and later joining the Australia Under-19 squad for the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, where he took 15 wickets. He also trained under and was mentored by former Pakistani-Australian spinner Fawad Ahmed.

At 18 he became part of the New South Wales Blues setup. He made his first-class debut for New South Wales on 27 October 2021 in the Sheffield Shield against Victoria, taking 3 for 44 in the first innings. His List A debut came on 24 November 2021 in the Marsh Cup, also against Victoria, when he took 4 for 21.

Sangha's Big Bash League career began with Sydney Thunder; he debuted on 12 December 2020 against the Melbourne Stars and finished the 2020–21 BBL season as one of the competition’s leading wicket-takers, taking 21 wickets and ranking third overall for the tournament. His performances attracted praise from opponents and commentators.

In 2022 he was selected by Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred as a replacement signing, although he did not play a match for the side. He was also named as a replacement signing for Washington Freedom in the inaugural Major League Cricket season in 2023 but did not appear in games for that club.

Injuries and development

Sangha suffered a stress fracture in his back in 2022 that sidelined him for about six months. During that year he spent time at the MRF Academy in Chennai to work on his bowling.

International consideration

In 2023 Sangha was included in an expanded 18-player list of probable players for Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad, a list that was to be trimmed to 15. His name was reportedly put forward to the national selection panel after notable domestic performances.

Public profile

Sangha is known for his leg-break spin and for having modeled parts of his game on spinners he admires; he has expressed particular respect for Yuzvendra Chahal. Away from professional cricket he sometimes helps coach youngsters at a local club. He maintains an interest in motorcycles and has been associated with models such as a Honda CBR and a Kawasaki Ninja.

Latest updates

As of 2023 Sangha continued to be active in domestic cricket circuits and remained on the radar for national selection following strong Big Bash League displays and youth international performances. He has recovered from the 2022 back injury and pursued additional training opportunities abroad to refine his craft.
