Early life and background

Tanzim Hasan Sakib was born on 20 October 2002 in Tilakchanpur village, Sylhet, Bangladesh. He grew up in the Sylhet area and attended Balagonj Government D.N. High School. As a child he earned a talent pool scholarship during primary school and progressed through regional selection events that drew the attention of national youth coaches.

Sakib received formal sports education at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), where he completed training that helped prepare him for Bangladesh’s youth teams. While at BKSP he took part in age-group international tours, representing Bangladesh Under-17s in India in 2016 and later featuring with the Under-19 side on tours to England and Sri Lanka in 2019.

Career

A right-arm fast-medium bowler and right-handed batsman, Sakib has played across Bangladesh’s domestic structure and in the national youth pathway. He made his List A debut on 27 March 2019 for Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. His first-class debut followed on 29 March 2021 for Sylhet Division in the National Cricket League.

Sakib has represented Sylhet Division from 2021 onward and turned out for the Sylhet Strikers in 2023. In the Dhaka Premier Division Twenty20 Cricket League on 5 June 2021 he produced a performance that earned him the man of the match award.

At youth international level he was part of Bangladesh’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and later included in the squad for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.

Sakib made his international One Day International debut on 15 September 2023 for Bangladesh against India in the Asia Cup, having been added to the squad as a replacement player for that tournament. In that match he dismissed India captain Rohit Sharma, an early and memorable scalp in his senior international career. In November 2023 he featured for Bangladesh A in the ACC Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, where he took the wickets of Sai Sudharsan and Riyan Parag in a List A fixture.

Across List A cricket he has played 37 matches and taken 57 wickets at a strike rate of 31.7. His best List A figures include a five-wicket haul, with top figures of 5/55, and he has also recorded a four-wicket performance.

Public profile

Sakib is known primarily for his bowling. He stands around 1.75 m (5 feet 9 inches) tall and has black hair and black eyes. He is Bangladeshi by nationality and follows Islam. As of 2023 he is unmarried.

In September 2023 posts made by Sakib on Facebook drew public criticism in Bangladesh and generated wide discussion. He later apologized to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, saying he did not intend to hurt anyone and expressing regret to those offended. He denied being misogynistic, and teammates and other figures commented on the matter while noting the posts’ problematic presentation.

Personal notes

Sakib first attracted attention in youth cricket after being selected for district and age-group events, including under-13 selection at Moulvibazar District Stadium while in school. He completed a short bowling course at Zahoor Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong early in his development.

Away from cricket he enjoys playing football in his spare time.
