Tarun Tahiliani Biography
Tarun Tahiliani is a veteran Indian fashion and interior designer, co-founder of the multi-designer luxury studio Ensemble and a founding member of the FDC
Early life and backgroundTarun Tahiliani was born in Mumbai in 1963 and raised in a family with naval and engineering roots. His father served as an admiral in the Indian Navy and his mother was among the early female engineers in Mumbai. He attended Campion School in Mumbai and The Doon School in Dehradun. Tahiliani briefly studied at St. Stephen's College in New Delhi before moving to the United States to continue his education. He studied at Vassar College and later attended the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, completing courses that included a one-year economics program and a degree in business management.
Career
After returning to India, Tahiliani initially joined the family business that manufactured oil exploration equipment, but he soon shifted toward fashion. He and his wife Sailaja (Sal) Tahiliani, who had been working as a model, co-founded Ensemble in 1987 along with designer Rohit Khosla. Ensemble began as a flagship store in the heritage quarter of south Mumbai and was conceived as a space to promote Indian designers and high-quality design at home rather than exporting talent overseas.
Tahiliani went on to study fashion courses at FIT in New York and established his own design studio in New Delhi in 1995. He has developed a reputation for bridal wear that emphasizes lighter, more wearable constructions that allow brides to move and celebrate comfortably. His work blends Indian craft and sensibility with international styling, a principle he refers to as Indian Modern.
Ensemble helped introduce and showcase many Indian designers; its early roster included labels such as Abu Jani–Sandeep Khosla, Rohit Khosla and others, and it later featured couture by designers like Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra alongside Tahiliani’s own collections. Over the years Tahiliani has opened multiple stores across India, including flagship locations in New Delhi and Hyderabad. His retail presence has also extended internationally, with his designs stocked by stores in Europe, the United States and elsewhere.
Public profile
Tahiliani gained early recognition when an outfit he designed was worn by Jemima Khan at her wedding. He has shown collections at major international fashion events and was the first Indian designer invited to showcase at Milan Fashion Week in 2003. His work has been presented in cities including New York, London, Milan, Tokyo, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Moscow and Karachi. In 2004 he received industry awards including the Moet and Chandon Fashion Tribute Award for Designer of the Year for India and the F Award for Best Women's Designer for Couture.
He has designed for film and public figures and his clientele and store visitors have included international and Bollywood personalities. Tahiliani has been called the "Karl Lagerfeld of India" by a British stylist, a label reflecting his prominence in fashion circles. Kumbhback, inspired by the traditional Kumbh Mela and noted for its sunset tones and rich colour palette, is among the works associated with his creative output.
Personal life
Tarun is married to Sailaja (Sal) Tahilani, who co-founded Ensemble and worked as a model earlier in her career. The couple met while studying in the United States and married after returning to India. The extended family is closely involved with the business: his sister Tina Parikh Tahilani serves as executive director at Ensemble, and his sons hold leadership roles related to the family’s enterprises. Tahiliani describes family and friendships as central to his life and places value on travel and enjoying life beyond material accumulation.
Approach and craft
Tahiliani emphasizes Indian craftsmanship and embroidery as a core, non-transferable element of his work. He advocates for communicating with artisans in local languages and for preserving the hands-on skills that define much of India’s couture tradition. His design philosophy balances traditional techniques with contemporary silhouettes and international presentation.
Latest updates
Tahiliani continues to operate stores across India and to present collections that marry Indian detail with global sensibilities. His Hyderabad and New Delhi flagships showcase ready-to-wear and occasion wear couture, reflecting markets he considers important to the brand.
