Early life and backgroundTejasvi Surya was born Lakya Suryanarayana Tejasvi on 16 November 1990 in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka. Raised in a joint Brahmin family, he grew up in Bangalore and attended Sri Kumaran Children Home for his early schooling. He later studied at National College, Jayanagar, and completed an LLB at Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies. Surya's parents are L. A. Suryanarayana, a joint commissioner of excise, and Rama Suryanarayana.
Career
Trained as a lawyer, Surya has practiced at the Karnataka High Court and has worked with Haranahalli Law Partners from 2015. In addition to his legal work, he has been active in public life from his student days. He was involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and served as a secretary of the organisation until 2016. In 2016 he became the general secretary of the Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).
Surya entered parliamentary politics in 2019 when the BJP nominated him for the Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency, a seat long associated with the late Ananth Kumar. At age 28 he won that election, defeating B. K. Hariprasad of the Indian National Congress by a margin of more than 300,000 votes and became a member of the 17th Lok Sabha. He retained the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning Bangalore South by 277,083 votes.
Beyond elected office, Surya has founded and led initiatives aimed at youth leadership and entrepreneurship. He is the founder and president of Arise India, a registered non-partisan trust focused on training young leaders, and he co-founded the Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence, which runs projects related to education and entrepreneurship. Earlier in his career he contributed as a columnist to India Facts and in 2017 took part in a young leadership program organised by the British High Commission in the UK.

Surya combines an active political life with public-facing interests. He is identified with the Bharatiya Janata Party and has cited political mentors such as the late Ananth Kumar and his family. Tejasvi Surya married Carnatic singer Sivasri Skandaprasad on 6 March 2025 at a private resort on Kanakapura Road in Bengaluru.
