Early life and backgroundTessy Thomas was born in April 1963 in Thathampally, Alappuzha, Kerala, into a Syrian-Christian Malayali family. She grew up in Alappuzha and attended St Michael’s Higher Secondary School and St. Joseph’s Girls Higher Secondary School there. Mathematics and science were early interests, and her childhood proximity to the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station helped shape a lifelong fascination with rockets and missiles.
Her family faced financial and health challenges while she was young. Her father, Taiparambil Thomas, suffered a paralytic stroke when she was in school, and her mother, Kunjamma Thomas, who had been a teacher, became the principal caregiver for Tessy and her five siblings. Tessy has four sisters and one brother. She later took an education loan to pursue engineering studies.
Education
Tessy completed a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from the University of Calicut. She then pursued an M.Tech in Guided Missiles at the Institute of Armament Technology (now Defence Institute of Advanced Technology) in Pune through a DRDO sponsorship. Further academic qualifications include a PhD in Missile Guidance from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, and an MBA in Operations Management from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.
Career
Tessy Thomas began her professional life as a faculty member in guided missiles at the Institute of Armament Technology in Pune in 1986. In 1988 she joined the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, where she worked under Dr APJ Abdul Kalam early in his tenure as director.
At DRDO she became closely associated with India’s Agni missile programme from its formative stages. Tessy designed guidance schemes for long-range systems used across Agni missiles. She served as associate project director for Agni-III, project director for Agni-IV, and later as project director for Agni-V, which successfully completed a test flight on 19 April 2012.
From 2014 to 2018 Tessy led multi-dimensional programs as Director of the Advanced Systems Laboratory at DRDO, overseeing development work on strategic missile systems. In 2018 she was appointed Director General (Aeronautical Systems) at DRDO and also took on the role of Government Nominee Director at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
