Thambi Ramaiah Biography
Thambi Ramaiah is an Indian actor, director, comedian, writer, lyricist and singer from Rarapuram village in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu. A National Award–win
Early life and backgroundThambi Ramaiah was born on 19 June 1956 in Rarapuram village in Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu. He is the eldest child of Jagannathapillai, who worked as a poet and fiction writer, and Pappammal, a homemaker. As a youth he learned musical instruments including the harmonium and guitar and developed an early interest in writing—initially aspiring to be a screenwriter and later exploring lyric writing and parody lyrics for popular songs.
At age 20 he moved to Chennai aiming to break into the film industry. Without immediate connections, he spent several years working for a private company before finding opportunities in television and cinema. In 1994 he began working as a dialogue writer on a Sun TV serial, which opened doors to roles as an assistant director, scriptwriter and lyricist. He has cited P. Vasu as a mentor in screenplay writing.
Career
Ramaiah’s film work spans directing, acting, comedy, writing and singing. He made his directorial debut with Manu Needhi (2000) and had an earlier cameo acting appearance in Malabar Police (1999). He later directed the fantasy comedy Indiralohathil Na Azhagappan (2008) and Maniyaar Kudumbam (2018).
As an actor he moved from supporting and cameo roles into more substantial character parts. His performance in Mynaa (2010) brought widespread recognition and earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. That film also led to several state, national and industry awards for his supporting and comic work.
Across the 2010s he built a busy screen career, appearing in numerous films across genres. Notable projects from this period include Saattai (2012), Kumki (2012), Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam (2014) and Thani Oruvan (2015). He continued to appear in a steady stream of releases through the decade, with credits such as Lokpal (2013), Nimirndhu Nil (2014), Vedalam (2015), Vanamagan (2017), Maniyaar Kudumbam (2018), Viswasam (2019) and Rudra Thandavam (2021).
In 2021 he played the role of Parasuram in the comedy-fantasy Vinodhaya Sitham, a performance that received positive attention. He has also been involved in web content, appearing in the SonyLIV series Victim – Who is Next? (2022).
Beyond acting and directing, Ramaiah has written comedy tracks for films, worked as a dialogue writer, and contributed lyrics and vocals to several songs including Pappa Poranthathu (2010), Nongala Enakku (2010), Oru Padi Mela (2013) and Polladhavaa (2015). He described early influences and a strong work ethic that led him to take on multiple responsibilities on set—often managing his own makeup, costumes and schedules.
Public profile
Ramaiah is known for using humour as a creative tool and for drawing character ideas from everyday people and books. He has spoken about observing streets and people to develop comic timing and authentic behaviour for his roles. Colleagues and audiences have recognised his versatility, moving comfortably between comedy and more serious supporting parts.
His family life is part of his public profile: he is married to Shanthy Ramaiah and is the father of actor Umapathy Ramaiah and daughter Viveka Ramaiah. He has recalled small, formative experiences—such as writing letters for classmates for pocket money—that reflect a practical, creative upbringing.
Ramaiah has also spoken candidly about the ups and downs of film work, including instances where many of his scenes were cut in post-production on projects such as Jilla and Amara Kaaviyam. He has expressed gratitude for directors who trusted him to write and shape his comedy scenes, citing Mynaa as a film that allowed him significant creative freedom.
Latest updates
During the mid-2010s Ramaiah was at an especially busy point in his career, sometimes working on multiple films in a single day. He continued to act and contribute to films into the late 2010s and early 2020s, with notable appearances in Vinodhaya Sitham (2021) and the web series Victim – Who is Next? (2022).
He has maintained interests outside acting: playing harmonium and guitar, writing parody lyrics for entertainment, and singing on film soundtracks. These creative pursuits complement his on-screen work and reflect a longstanding engagement with music and writing.
