Tharun Bhascker Biography
Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam is an Indian filmmaker, writer, actor and television presenter best known for directing the Telugu breakout hit Pelli Choopulu (
Early life and backgroundTharun Bhascker Dhaassyam was born on 5 November 1988 in Madras (now Chennai). Raised in a family connected to public service and the arts, he is the only child of Vudhay Bhascker Dhaassyam, who worked as an executive engineer in the Water Resources Department, and Geetha Bhascker Dhaassyam, who has worked as an actor and teacher. Tharun completed his schooling at The Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet and went on to earn a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from Swami Vivekananda Institute of Technology, Secunderabad. He later pursued formal film training with a diploma in filmmaking and studied at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles.
Tharun showed interest in creative pursuits from a young age. During his school years he participated in arts competitions, including an international fresco competition in 2000 that involved representatives from Southeast Asian countries. A montage he made for a college graduation ceremony drew strong praise and helped cement his decision to pursue filmmaking seriously.
Career
Tharun began by making short films. Between 2011 and 2012 he wrote and directed several Telugu short films, including Highderabad, Kaala Ghoda, The Journey and Anukokunda; the latter was screened at the Cannes Festival in 2013. He developed the script for his first feature while an engineering student and continued to work on his craft through short-form projects and independent collaborations.
His feature film directorial debut came with the 2016 Telugu romantic comedy Pelli Choopulu, a film that won wide recognition. The film earned multiple awards, including National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Telugu and Best Screenplay for Dialogues, as well as several industry accolades such as Filmfare Awards South for Best Director and honors from South Indian International Movie Awards and Santosham Film Awards for debut direction. Pelli Choopulu’s success led to remakes in other Indian languages.
Following that breakthrough, Tharun continued to work as a writer and director, contributing to projects such as Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi (2018). He also expanded his onscreen presence: he made his acting debut in 2018 with a role in Mahanati, later appearing in films including Sammohanam (2018), Falaknuma Das (2019), Skylab (2021) and Sita Ramam (2022).
In addition to filmmaking and acting, Tharun has worked in television. In 2020 he hosted the Telugu talk show Neeku Maathrame Cheptha on ETV. Outside feature work he is involved in media ventures: he is a director at Vinoothna Geeta Media and a co-founder and director of Sainma, organizations connected to his creative work.

He has a visible social media presence under his full name and is noted to enjoy hobbies such as cooking, travelling, tennis and swimming. He is a dog owner and has a pet named Coffee.

Tharun married Latha Naidu, a production and costume designer, on 20 November 2013. He follows Hinduism and his zodiac sign is Scorpio. His extended family includes an uncle, Varun Bhaskar, who has been active in Telangana politics as an MLA from the Warangal West constituency.
Controversies and public incidents
In 2020 Tharun filed a complaint with cybercrime authorities in Hyderabad after he and his team faced heavy online trolling following an Instagram post about the film Kappela. The dispute arose from reactions to his commentary on the film and led him to take formal action to address abusive messages on social media.
