Early life and backgroundDalip Singh Rana was born on 27 August 1972 in Dhiraina, Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. He left formal schooling after the second standard for financial reasons and began working at an early age to help support his family. As a youth he held a series of manual jobs—carrying saplings, picking pebbles from a river for market sale, and working on road construction—that exposed him to long hours of physical labor and helped develop his extraordinary size.
He later worked as a stone crusher and served as a bodyguard in Shimla. A retired IPS officer, Mehal Singh Bhullar, spotted him and helped him secure a post in the Punjab Armed Police in 1993. While with the police he participated in several sports, including basketball and track-and-field events, and also pursued bodybuilding, winning the Mr India title in 1995 and 1996.
Career
Rana transitioned from bodybuilding to professional wrestling at the turn of the century. Wrestling under the ring name Giant Singh, he fought in All Pro Wrestling (APW) in California from October 2000 to 2001 and trained for several months in San Francisco with World Championship Wrestling (WCW). From 2001 to 2002 he competed in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), and over the following years worked with other international promotions including Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico and All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW).
Khali achieved a major career milestone in 2006 when he became the first wrestler of Indian origin to sign with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He made his WWE debut on 21 April 2006. During his in-ring career he used signature maneuvers such as the Khali Vice Grip (also called the Brain Chop) and the Khali Chop. He held the World Heavyweight Championship during his time with WWE and was later inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2021. After retiring from full-time competition he founded Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE), where he has held the promotion’s heavyweight title on multiple occasions.
Acting and media
Outside the ring, Rana has worked in film and television. He made a Hollywood appearance in the 2005 film The Longest Yard. His Bollywood debut came in the 2010 film Kushti. He has also appeared on television, competing on the Indian reality series Bigg Boss 4 in 2010 and taking a role in the American sitcom Outsourced in 2011.
