Early life and backgroundThushar Vellappally was born in 1970 in Alappuzha District, Kerala. He belongs to the Ezhava community and follows Hinduism. Career
Thushar moved into active politics when the Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) was formed in 2015. Shortly after the party’s launch he was appointed its president and helped steer the party’s early activities. Under his leadership BDJS aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and contested elections in Kerala.
In the 2016 Kerala assembly elections BDJS contested 37 of the 140 seats and secured roughly 4 percent of the vote — a modest beginning for a newly formed regional party. In 2016 Thushar was also named State Convener of the NDA in Kerala. He has held a government-appointed position as a member of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board, an appointment made during the UDF government’s term.
Thushar was the NDA candidate for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 general election, contesting against Rahul Gandhi. His candidacy was publicly announced by senior NDA leadership ahead of polling that year.
Public profile
Thushar’s family connections and background in business have been part of his public profile since he entered politics. He is married to Asha Thushar and the couple have two children: a son, Devan, and a daughter, Devi. His sister is Vandana Sreekumar.
The BDJS under Thushar’s leadership positioned itself as a party aiming to represent Ezhava interests while seeking a broader platform among Hindu and other communities in Kerala. He has publicly described the party’s intent as secular in outlook, even as it draws on support from specific community groups.
Controversies and legal matters
Public records show that Thushar has been linked to several investigations and legal cases. Authorities registered a case in May 2018 concerning alleged diversion of funds under a microfinance scheme. Earlier in 2018 the High Court permitted an anti-corruption agency to pursue inquiries involving him and his father related to alleged financial irregularities. In August 2019 he was arrested in Ajman in connection with a cheque-bounce matter; he was later bailed out by a businessman while a process toward an out-of-court settlement was underway. He also publicly opposed the Supreme Court’s Sabarimala verdict in late 2018 and voiced his disagreement on social media.

Available asset information as of 2019 lists various holdings including bank deposits, land, buildings and personal items. Those disclosures include cash, bank deposits, gold jewellery, agricultural and non-agricultural land, commercial and residential buildings, and a vehicle collection. An approximate net worth figure is included in those records for 2019.
