Early life and background

Tillotama Shome was born on 25 June 1979 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Raised in a Bengali family, she is the daughter of Anupam Kumar Shome, a retired Indian Air Force officer, and Baisakhi Shome, a former stage performer. She grew up with a younger brother, Gaurav Shome.

Shome studied at Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi where she completed a Bachelor of Arts (honours). She went on to earn a master’s degree in English literature from Delhi University and later completed a masters in Educational Theatre at New York University. While at NYU she received a letter of recommendation from filmmaker Mira Nair. After graduating she worked with the Creative Arts Team at domestic violence shelters and prisons.

Career

Tillotama Shome began her screen career as a child and young actor in English-language and international films. Her English-language film debut came with Monsoon Wedding (2001) in which she appeared as Alice. She went on to act in a range of films across languages: the Bengali film Shadows of Time (2004), English titles such as Little Box of Sweets (2006), The Waiting City (2009) and Sold (2014), and the Bengali film Tasher Desh (2012). She also appeared in the German film Monsoon (2012) playing the role of Shanti.

Her work in Indian cinema includes roles in Mandarin-language and regional projects as well as commercially notable Hindi films. Among her Hindi-language credits are Shanghai (2012), Turning 30 (2011) in which she played Malini Roy, Hindi Medium (2017), Sir (2018), and Angrezi Medium (2020). In Punjabi cinema she appeared in Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost (2013) as Kanwar.

Shome has a strong connection to theatre. During her college years she joined the Asmita Theatre Group in New Delhi and has performed in plays such as What is Done is Done. Her theatre training and stage work have been a consistent part of her artistic life.

She has also worked in short films and regional cinema: English shorts including Clap Clap (2003), Butterfly (2003) and Long After (2006), a Nepali short Sahasi Chori (2013), and Hindi short films such as Nayantara’s Necklace (2015) and Love Shots (2016).

In recent years Shome has appeared increasingly on digital platforms. Her web and streaming credits include Mentalhood (2020), Delhi Crime (2022), The Night Manager (2023), Tooth Pari: When Love Bites (2023), and Lust Stories 2 (2023). She earned recognition for performances in Chintu Ka Birthday and Señor as well as for her work on Delhi Crime Season 2.

Shome’s performances have been recognized at festivals and awards ceremonies. She won Best Actress at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in 2013 for Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost. Subsequent honours include a Best Actor Award from the Jagran Film Festival (2019), FOI Online Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Señor (2020), and multiple awards in 2021 including critics’ recognition and a Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Señor.
