Todd Murphy Biography
Australian off‑spinner Todd Murphy rose from regional cricket in Echuca and Moama to make his Test debut for Australia in February 2023. A product of club,
Early life and backgroundTodd Murphy was born on 15 November 2000 in Echuca, Victoria, and grew up in the nearby New South Wales riverside town of Moama. Cricket featured in his upbringing: his father, Jamie Murphy, played premier cricket in his younger years and remained involved in his son’s development. Todd’s older brother, Joel Murphy, also played at club level. Todd attended Deakin University, where he completed a combined degree in Exercise and Sport Science and Business with a focus on Sport Management.
Todd began playing cricket as a youngster, originally as a batsman. Around the age of 16 he converted to off‑spin bowling and developed into a bowling allrounder who bats left‑handed. He earned early recognition at junior level, receiving a Sportstar junior award in 2017 and catching the eye of former Australian player Craig Howard during under‑16 training, which helped him progress into representative pathways.
Career
Murphy’s senior career has included stints with Moama Cricket Club and two seasons in Victorian Premier Cricket for St Kilda. He made his List A debut for a Victoria Second XI side on 10 March 2021 against Tasmania in Melbourne. A month later, on 3 April 2021, he made his first‑class debut for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. In only his second first‑class appearance he made an immediate impact, scoring 24 runs and taking seven wickets to steer Victoria to victory over Tasmania.
His performances earned him selection for an Australia A tour to Sri Lanka in June 2021 and a place in the Sydney Sixers squad for the 2021 Big Bash League, making his Twenty20 debut for the Sixers on 26 December 2021.
Across his opening first‑class matches Murphy established himself as a prolific wicket‑taker: in his first ten games he took 29 dismissals at an average of 25.20. During the 2022–23 Sheffield Shield season he was frequently discussed as a potential successor to Australia’s established Test off‑spinner Nathan Lyon.
International career
Murphy’s domestic form led to a Test call‑up for the 2023 Border‑Gavaskar Trophy against India. He was one of four spinners named in the Australia squad for that series, alongside Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson. On 9 February 2023 he received his baggy Green (Test cap number 465) from Nathan Lyon and made his Test debut for Australia at Nagpur in India.
Public profile
Physically, Murphy is listed at approximately 172 cm (5 ft 8 in) with greyish blue eyes and golden blonde hair. He wears jersey number 9 for Australia. Murphy bats left‑handed and bowls right‑arm off‑spin.
Off the field, he has been described as spirited from a young age, and family accounts note his energy and determination growing up. His father drove him regularly to Melbourne to support his development. Outside cricket he enjoys playing football and socialising with friends.
Latest updates
In 2023 Murphy reached the milestone of Test selection and continues to represent Victoria in first‑class cricket while also appearing in franchise T20 competition with the Sydney Sixers. His early first‑class returns and rapid rise through Australia’s domestic ranks marked him as a spinner to watch for the national side.
